School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-- Each title gives a glimpse into the lives and deeds of people who dared to fight for their ideals, sometimes to the death. Information is divided into sections/chapters that focus either on the role the figures played or on the context in which deeds were accomplished. A one- or two-sentence overview precedes the text of each section. Full-color historical paintings, photographs, maps, and illustrations appear on nearly every spread. Explorers of North America takes readers away with Daniel Boone, Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea, among others. The heroes Fighting for Their Faith range from Saul of Tarsus to Oscar Romero of El Salvador. The Heroes of World War II include such well-known figures as Audie Murphy and lesser known ones, such as Sophie Scholl. While these series entries cover a broad range of names in an interesting way, the profiles are too brief to serve as more than an introduction, or possibly the motivation for seeking out other sources. The indexes are essential, since the tables of contents focus on the situations or settings rather than on the people themselves. Informative reading experiences, these give a sense of the courage displayed under difficult situations, but will be of limited use for reference and research purposes. --Janie Schomberg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, IL
