Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
A companion volume to her earlier Heroines, Hazell's twelve essay choices are an eclectic lot. Between Socrates and Martin Luther King, Jr., she tackles Mansa Kankan Musa, Sequoyah, Einstein, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others. Each selection includes a brief biography and a placement of the notable within his time. Hazell also includes maps that point out the most relevant places in the lives of her heroes. All are illustrated in styles reminiscent of each man's era and culture. The result is a good and pleasant introduction to world culture and history.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8In this companion volume to Heroines (Abbeville, 1996), Hazell focuses on 12 men who shared an ability to affect change, whether through leadership, art, or invention. Included are well-known individuals such as Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as men who are less famous, such as Prince Taishi Shotoku, a ruler of Japan in the 6th and 7th centuries; and Mansa Kankan Musa, a Muslim emperor who ruled in West Africa during the 1300s. Creators such as Leonardo da Vinci, William Shakespeare, and Jorge Luis Borges are also included. Each six-page biography contains a short overview of the figure's life, a portrait, and a map showing the major cities and countries mentioned. Another useful section focuses on the society in which the individual lived and the changes caused by his influence. Highlighting the individual's world in this way helps readers understand just what made the man great in his own time and why he is someone to respect and admire today. Each biography is accompanied by attractive artwork done in the style of the subject's era. An informative book that should prove useful to report writers and browsers alike.Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, IL

Introduction

Do you ever wish you could visit faraway places or travel back in time? In fact you can do these things every time you open a history book. History is made up of stories of people like you and me, leading their lives and having adventures at any time in the past.

Many history books only tell about governments, wars, and dates. These facts are important, but if you are like me, you want to imagine what it felt like to live in a world quite different from our own. This is what I tried to do when I wrote this book, which is about several historical people who were all heroes in their own way. You might think of heroes as brave leaders, fearless warriors, daring rescuers, or even sports champions. But my idea of a hero is not limited to these kinds of people. I think a hero is anyone who is brave, kind, or wise-not just once but for an entire lifetime.

In this book you will find many kinds of heroes, from all around the world and from different periods of history. Some were great warriors or rulers, and others were artists, scientists, authors, or philosophers. All of them did things that affect our world today.

Although these men made mistakes like anyone else, and although some of them had talents that were not properly recognized in their own day, each used his talents fully, with courage and conviction to the benefit of others.

There are many more heroic people than could fit into these pages. There are heroes-and heroines-living around us all over the world, but there just isn't room for everyone in a single book. Who else might you include?

The story of each hero is illustrated with his portrait, other scenes from his lifetime, and a map of the area inwhich he lived. I have tried to draw each man just as someone living in his own time might have done. I hope that the stories and illustrations in this book will make you think of heroes of your own and will inspire you to use your own special talents to be heroic in your own way.
