Children's LiteratureAs a teacher, I was disappointed in this collection of true, heroic stories. I was hoping to find an interesting way to engage my middle school students with history. Since this compilation contains stories about the first moon landing, an escape from a World War II prison camp, and mountain climbing, I thought this would be perfect. Unfortunately, many of these stories are difficult to read and follow. The stories are pulled from larger books and need some explanation to set the scene. In order to get the most out of this book, students would need to have considerable background knowledge about the topic. Also, many of the stories have complex vocabulary that is hard to decode. On the bright side, there are several stories that are told in a compelling manner, particularly the stories about Mother Teresa and Louis Pasteur. 2004 (orig. 1994), Kingfisher Press, Ages 9 to 14.
