    My daughter loves these books!

My daughter loves dragons and read this whole series of books very quickly. She and her friend act out scenes from the books and write their own stories about the characters. We really enjoyed going to the movie, "How to Train Your Dragon" together recently. I really like the message of cooperation and understanding among different people/dragons. It really resonates now with world events and a climate of distrust. I want my daughter to think about other cultures with an open mind and empathy. The books also help kids that are not the most popular or tough to see there are all different kinds of people and all are valuable and have something to offer. I would highly recommend these books for girls or boys ages 8 to 12.

Ironically, Got My Son to Use the Library

We were in a new town, and I was trying to get my kids excited about the local public library. My 9YO, who LOVES Hiccup books, was dragging his feet, when his little brother spotted the spine of this book on the shelves and said, "Hey, isn't that one of those cool books???" 45 minutes later my son was begging me to get proof of residence and speed back to the library so we could get our library cards and check out this book so he could finish it and re-read it at home :).

Pretty funny, since in this volume, our Hero, Hiccup, is tasked with spending his birthday stealing a book from the Meathead Public Library (we checked our copy out properly, didn't steal it :D ). The Hairy Scary Librarian actually reminds me of one of the librarians I encountered as a kid, come to think of it! Author Cowell has a gift for presenting the world as kids seem to see it in a very non-condescending manner that is real to kids and smile-inducing to adults.

As always, the book was entertaining enough to keep my son engrossed in it until he was finished (twice) and my husband and I each read it as well, just because the books are so cute, and we want to know what he's talking about all the time. I often buy these books in twos; one for my son, and one to donate to his school, and it's actually a pleasure that he has a new school now so we can share them with a whole new crop of kids!

School has just begun, and as a surprise I just ordered book#7 for my son. Can't wait for it to get here-- love watching him actually smile and laugh as he reads!

    I Also Recommend:

This was my favorite book of the series!

I like this book a lot because it is funny and exciting! It is scary in some parts like when the Hairy Scarey Librarian almost kills Hiccup and Camacazi while trying to help Toothless (Hiccup's dragon).
I especially thought the dragon species book and the dragon dictionary in the back of the book were really cool! There is also a dragonese conversation guide that is fun to use with my friends!
If you like dragons and vikings you should read this book!

A Book the Boys Fight to Read First

I was having a difficult time getting my son interested in reading and this book series is now in great demand in my house. All my kids elementary to High School love reading these books.
