Editorial Reviews

Donna Seaman
"Masters and Johnson" entered the nomenclature of sexuality after they pulled back the covers, so to speak, on sexual activity and female orgasm in their groundbreaking first book, "Human Sexual Response" (1966), but it's actually been the less euphonic "Masters, Johnson, and Kolodny" ever since Robert C. Kolodny joined the team 17 years ago. This trio of renowned sex therapists and researchers have kept pace with all the social, political, and medical changes that affect our sexual behavior, from gender roles to body image, inhibitions, drug use, and AIDS. Here they focus exclusively on the sexual interactions of men and women, covering such topics as patterns of sexual response, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, extramarital affairs, adolescent sexuality, and sex and aging. They also illuminate the finer points of sexual techniques and attitudes. As always, Masters, Johnson, and Kolodny manage to combine psychological insights with physiological expertise, explaining the subtleties of each clearly, concisely, and reassuringly. They even, on occasion, attain a level of eloquence: "If words are the currency of poetry, and color is the currency of art, touch is the currency of sex." This statement introduces an important chapter on the difference between sexuality and sensuality, between the "action" of coitus and the pleasure of touching. This distinction is allied to the divergence between love and intimacy, and both relate to a variety of sexual dysfunctions and disorders. Such problems as low sexual desire, premature ejaculation, and women's inability to experience orgasm with a partner are all carefully defined, and exercises for overcoming them are described. Sex is, after all, "as much a state of mind as a set of physical responses," and nearly everyone will benefit from reading this calm, sensible, and practical volume.
