Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Say goodbye to those dreaded buffer underruns: never create another CD-ROM coaster! Say hello to creating custom CD-ROMs containing virtually anything you like (consistent with current copyright law, of course): data, photos, music, whatever. Hewlett-Packard Official Recordable CD Handbook will show you how to purchase, install, and make the most of your CD-RW or CD-R — whether it comes from HP or one of its erstwhile competitors. It's also a solid guide to Adaptec's market leading CD-RW recording software packages, Easy CD-Creator, Direct CD, and Toast (for the Mac).

Mark Chambers walks you through preparing your material and choosing the right disc type (answering the age-old question: why can't I play this music on my boombox when it sounds just great in my CD-ROM drive). There's a bunch of CD-RW jargon you unfortunately need to know, and he nails it in a hurry: track-at-once, disc-at-once, multisession, Joliet, packet-writing mode, all that stuff.

There's an excellent chapter on preparing your computer to minimize the risk of trouble while recording; handy hints on creating CD-ROM presentation packages, and adding HTML page links to help folks navigate your disks. You'll also walk through three cool projects, including converting your old vinyl LPs to CD-ROM.
