Hey Dad! Let's Have a Catch

Overview

The simple, yet meaningful, father and son activity becomes the focal point of a children's book entitled, Hey Dad, Let's Have a Catch. To an only child the five minute daily catches, in between the two jobs Dad held, were precious moments and more than a physical activity. "A Catch" becomes a metaphor for communication between father and son/parent and child as the dynamics of a catch change through the years, sadly end, and are reborn as the son becomes a father himself. A catch is depicted as a process, a rite ...

Great book to give a dad.

This is an awesome book. I bought it for my 5 year old to give to his dad for Father's Day. They love to play catch together. My husband had me read it to both of them-we could not get through it without crying. It is very touching.

Went and purchased gloves and baseballs after reading this!!!!!!

Hey Dad! Let¿s Have A Catch is a fantastic read for both father and child. Not only did it bring back memories of quality time with my dad but has also made the relationship with my kids stronger as we relish the time we have together playing catch. At my 7 yr old son¿s request this book has become a staple of our nightly reading list

    A reviewer

HEY DAD! LET'S HAVE A CATCH, by Harold Theurer, illustrations by William Baxter Bledsoe is not your typical picture book. The story is straightforward--a circle of life tale about a father and son¿s lifetime ritual of playing catch, about how the game and its players change through the years, and about passing on that ritual to the next generation. All of this is conveyed in pure, unfussy prose. The illustrations are clever in that the faces of the father and son are never fully revealed. We see them from behind, from above, from the side, from a distance, partially cropped on the page, all of which adds to the universality of the tale. What¿s atypical is that this is a memoir, not fiction, and memoir is not a form of literature you often see in the children¿s market. So in addition to its overt messages concerning the value of communication and ritual, there is an interesting subliminal message: that there are valuable lessons to be learned not only from the rich and famous, but from the simplest acts in the simplest of lives. You might pass this book on to your children to read on their own, but I think this book is best when shared. Why have them bounce a ball off a wall, when you can have a catch?
