Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Tabby Cat eats her food but she is still very hungry. Maybe there is food near the tree? Or near the plant? Tabby Cat hunts and hunts until she finds Sammy. Sammy has lots of good food—scoops and scoops of ice cream. Simple, funny and easy to read, this story and its three companion stories in the set have adorable illustrations. Bold colors distinguish the pictures and the text. Each word is simply represented in the picture. Ideal for new readers, each storybook includes advice to help you guide and support your child as you read. Tabby Cat is a very busy cat. Four adventures are included—"The Chase," " Hungry Cat," "Bump! Thump! Splat!" and "Cat Bath." 2000, Candlewick Press, $4.99. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Dia L. Michels

K-Gr 1-Each book has four tales, all preceded by an introduction that tells what the story is about. A "Helping Your Brand-New Reader" page explains how to share these entries with the youngest readers. In the first title, the orange-striped feline searches for a mouse, plays with some yarn, wakes the African-American boy with whom she lives, and hides in a drawer. In the second volume, the mischievous Tabby chases things, hunts for food, swats some vegetables, and washes herself. The illustrations provide good context clues and mirror the humor of the texts.-Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
