Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Two rhyming board books that present familiar concepts. The first one introduces morning activities such as yawning, stretching, breakfast, getting dressed, and playtime. The second title looks at the various sleep outfits that the endearing creatures put on before joining a pajama party: "Pajammy to the left. Pajammy to the right.-Everybody's wearing them for dancing tonight." Everyone finally settles down, the lights are turned out, and wishes are shared for a hushed good night. Boynton's characters are as lovable as ever, all with expressions sure to win over toddlers.-Olga R. Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, writer, and songwriter. Since 1974, Boynton has written and illustrated over forty children’s books and seven general audience books, including four New York Times bestsellers. More than 60 million of her books have been sold—“mostly to friends and family,” she says. She has also written and produced five albums of award-winning children’s music. Three of her albums have been certified Gold, and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, is nearing Platinum. She lives with her family on a farm in New England.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

Recommended in the morning and really anytime of the day!

Love the book. I trade off and on reading it out in a sing song voice. Have not read a bad Boynton book yet!

    Daughter loves it!

My daughter w as only 19 months when we got this. After reading this only once she started saying "Hey! Wake up!" Now (22 months) she flips thru and "reads" the story on her own. I recently saw a parent read this book at daycare on parents day and all of the kids really enjoyed yawning & stretching with the characters.

    Daughter's Favorite Book

My dauther was 1 1/2 when she discovered this book and she fell in love with it. She has at least 50 books, but this is the one she wants. With all other books, she wanted us to name items on the pages and point out things, but this was the first one she wanted to actually READ (a big step). She has it memorized and acts out some of the parts (ie. yawn, stretch, wiggle your nose). We read this every day.

    Another great book

I bought this book for my 1 year old's birthday. He hasn't gotten a chance to see it yet because his 5 year old brother just loves it!!! He walks around reciting the book, especially 'broccoli stew....EW!!!' This book is just fantastic!! Absolutely recommended for any age.
