Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This upbeat first novel offers a glimpse at the Catholic grade school experiences of two girls in Baltimore. Arlene Warren dreads beginning sixth grade at Saint Anthony's under the watchful eye of strict Sister Rose, the nun who has had her number ever since she scolded Arlene for laughing in church last year. But school holds other challenges as well, as Arlene befriends an outcast new student and works hard to hone her academic skills. Arlene's tolerance of the ``Holy Terror'' grows, and she and her classmates actually find themselves saddened at Sister Rose's year-end news. Stauch's breezy writing is sure to keep readers turning the pages, but does not completely hide the novel's shortcomings. The story feels contemporary, but forced references to the Korean War, modes of transportation and the prices at Woolworth's awkwardly place the action in the early 1950s. Sister Rose's actions (which amount to stern encouragement) and her demeanor hardly make her the ogre readers are led to expect. Nonetheless, Strauch's debut marks the welcome entry of a lighthearted voice into the ranks of middle-grade fiction. Ages 8-up. (Mar.)
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- It's 1951, and Arlene is entering sixth grade at St. Anthony's School in Baltimore. To her dismay, her teacher is Sister Rose, who caught her laughing in church on Good Friday the previous spring. Caught up in the usual ups and downs of school, Arlene struggles with the nun's contradictory treatment of her; no praise comes without admonishment. But the real challenge is her response to Eunice Montgomery, a smart but unkempt new girl and class outcast. First motivated by guilt, Arlene befriends Eunice, who has recently lost her mother and is caring for her younger brothers. Gradually, the friendship grows. What sets this apart from the usual school story is the authentic flavor of time and place, provided in details throughout (kid curlers, brown jumper uniforms, Noxzema, the specter of the Korean War). The depiction of the heroine's large Irish family and her perception of the nuns are right on target. Arlene is a believable and likable girl, spirited and outspoken, who matures in this crucial year and comes to terms with Sister Rose. A real slice of life as it was for Catholic school kids in the 50's.-- Marie Orlando, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY
Ilene Cooper
Think Ingrid Bergman in the film "The Bells of St. Mary's", and you'll be hitting the right emotional note for this story of a Catholic schoolgirl butting heads with her teacher, Sister Rose, the Holy Terror. Arlene is dreading spending her sixth grade year with Sister Rose, sure that the nun plays favorites and equally sure that she isn't one of them. But as the year progresses, Arlene and Sister Rose come to have a grudging respect for one another, and by summer, when Sister Rose announces she's being transferred to another school, Arlene realizes that Sister Rose has taught her more than just classwork. Set in 1952, this does seem a throwback to another era. The subplot, about a poor girl, whom Arlene befriends, adds to that effect. But first-time author Strauch has a very nice way with words, plotting, and pacing; and the concerns her characters deal with--school, sibling relationships, friendships--transcend any particular time. A satisfying read.
