Learn all about animals and what they do during the winter!

During the cold winter months, some animals go into a deep sleep called hibernation. You'd be surprised to learn about all of the other animals that hibernate besides bears, like squirrels, woodchucks, chipmunks and bats. Children will learn how an animal prepares for hibernation by stuffing itself with food so that it can survive in its dormant months and how animals prepare safe spots, like dens and burrows, so that they will be protected from predators as they sleep.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Pastuszek
Hibernation is a book that can be easily used across the curriculum in school settings. Early readers will be delighted with the mixed illustrations of real pictures and graphics of animals, and even learn some facts about their habitats in the winter months. First and second graders will readily generate questions after hearing all of the scientific facts and vocabulary words associated with animals in hibernation. Animals hibernate in different ways. Readers will be able to compare and contrast different habitats as well as see that some animals will sleep during long periods of drought or high temperatures. Science teachers will enjoy sharing how animals store up fat in the winter, keep their body temperatures at amazing levels and migrate to other places. Many new questions about hibernation can be generated from this book. Language Arts teachers will be thrilled to find a well-constructed vocabulary list with definitions of new vocabulary words included at the end of the book. Reviewer: Laura Pastuszek
