Two soft-covered board books just right for smallest hands celebrate popular rhymes with soothing illustrations by Sanja Rescek: Hickory, Dickory, Dock: And Other Favorite Nursery Rhymes and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: And Other Favorite Bedtime Rhymes. "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" depicts a multicultural cast of characters carrying out the activities alongside helpful numerals on one spread, while another spread shows Jack and Jill tumbling downhill, opposite a before-and-after illustration of Little Miss Muffet. This soft, padded book with sturdy pages contains a collection of favorite rhymes. While many are indeed familiar, they do not have much meaning for today's kids. What are silver bells, cockle shells, and the pretty maids that Mary is growing in her garden? Why does Peter put his wife in a pumpkin shell and why should Miss Muffett, or anyone be frightened by a little spider? The most obscure rhyme is "I Has a Little Nut tree," but the one that really begs for explanation is "Rub-a dub-dub." Why are all these three shopkeepers considered knaves? If you put all these questions aside, kids will enjoy the sound of the language and will learn the rhymes regardless of whether they have any real meaning for them. I guess that is why they have been passed along for so many generations. 2006, Tiger Tales/ME Media, Ages 2 to 5.

PreS-Two cheerful, soothing collections. One or two selections appear per page; cartoon art full of smiles and warm pastels accompanies each rhyme and fills the spreads. The bedtime verses include "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John" and the lyrics to the lullaby "All Through the Night." The board-book pages and squishy covers will withstand young children's affections. The familiarity of the rhymes and sweetness of the pictures will appeal to them.-Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
