Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Elaine Gass Hirsch
Amateur sleuth and barbeque restaurant proprietor Lulu Taylor has stumbled upon yet another murder scene in this third installment of Adams's (aka Elizabeth Spann Craig) Memphis BBQ Mystery series. The competitive business of beauty pageants takes center stage when a mean-spirited pageant coach is found dead during a party in her own home, with a host of suspects present. A variety of eccentric characters—including Lulu's sidekick, Cherry, who volunteers at Graceland and rides a motorcycle with a picture of Elvis on the side of her helmet—should make this an enjoyable read in a familiar style for detective fiction fans. The book and series are classic examples of "cozy mysteries" or "cozies," where a nonprofessional female investigator probes low-graphic crimes with amiable supporting characters and recurring thematic elements, in this case food and cooking. The plot is entertaining although contrived, and Lulu's hypotheses are uncannily accurate. While a frumpy, mild-mannered older lady protagonist with a penchant for floral-print dresses may only pique the interest of the most serious young adult mystery buffs, Hickory Smoked Homicide has crossover appeal and plenty of mouth-watering references to Southern cuisine.
