A very good book on heart health

This book is a little dated in the sense that it was published in 2002 and obviously the demand must have been good to require a second printing in 2003. So, it is nearly 3 years old, but rest assured that the information is quite uptodate and it is worth spending the few hours to go through the book. The author, Christian Wilde is not a medical doctor but is well qualified to write on the subject since he is a sort of investigative journalist and when he had a problem with his own health, he did not just go by the doctor's prescriptions but investigated all the literature thoroughly and more importantly discussed with the leading researchers and cardiologists to ensure that his understanding is correct. The result is an outstanding and up-to-date book on the various risk factors that go to make up the problems in the field of heart health, resulting in Angina, Heart Attacks and Strokes. That the author and the editorial team did an exemplary job has been endorsed by the leading members of the medical fraternity. Thus you can safely use the information provided in this book to discuss with your own doctor (who is the final authority to help you with your health problems) in an intelligent and meaningful manner. Christian covers all the important risk factors that may compromise the heart health including cholesterol, Hypertension, Diabetes, Smoking, Obesity, Fibrinogen, CRP, Homocysteine etc. You may be aware of some of them and may not be aware about some of them. This book is a handy reference guide. I enjoyed reading the book and as some one deeply interested in holistic health, I was impressed by the information provided. I found the editing to be less than perfect at some places but fortunately, that doesn't impinge on the accuracy of information presented. The book has a good Glossary of Medical Terms to help us, references to the various research articles cited in the book and an Index. I found the larger type font and the non-glare paper easy on the eyes. I would have preferred to see the book hardbound to withstand repeated use since I expect this book to be referred to often. I strongly recommend that if you have any interest in heart health (either of your own, your spouse, parents or friends), you should buy this book and the companion book by the same author.

5 stars worth of gratitude, I may make 50 years of age!

I have had a family history of heart attacks and early demise because of inherited heart disease. I have always been concerned and very honestly afraid that my life may follow the same course as my dad and grandfather. I never knew many of the inherited traits could be detected and altered until I read certain sections of the book, particularly a subchapter ¿what was specifically inherited?¿ I asked ¿ no,. . . I more or less demanded my doctor order certain blood tests that frankly he was not even aware of¿the answers came back loud and clear. Even though he didn¿t know how to change the test results he was more concerned with my welfare than he was his own ego. I brought the book in on my next meeting and together we used the information to bring those ¿off the chart inherited test results¿ down (in 8 weeks) into normal ranges. I am grateful that my doctor was open-minded and interested in my welfare and for the information that lead me to these benefits. My son has an appointment in mid-October to now have the same tests. If these risk factors are inherited why should he not also be tested? Any parent should read the chapter about heart disease beginning in the teenage years! My wife is reading about the risks to women.

The easy to read book that could save your life

This is a very easily and for me a layperson in cardiology a very understandable book. It has brought to light many areas that most people (and I am one) will or do suffer from these life threatening diseases. If you only come away reading this book with the knowledge that you and only you can make the difference in keeping yourself alive. Very, very well written.

The lack of attention to women¿s heart attack risks

I must say, I never knew there were so many risk factors for heart disease and stroke that can impact a women¿s health. My question is why haven¿t we been told about the risks? The health field has certainly told us about the importance of having pap smears and mammograms so why haven¿t we been told about the need to have treadmills and other tests for heart disease prevention? According to this book, heart disease claims more women¿s lives than all the cancers together! I keep hearing stories on TV of women (even young women) who were sent home from their doctor¿s office after being told their symptoms were indigestion related and the bad advice resulted in a heart attack! I now will insist on a treadmill, a CRP and several of the other tests outlined in the book even if I have to pay for them myself. I strongly recommend all women read this book and not just for your husband¿s sake.

A Wealth of Information for Heart Attach and Stroke Candidates

As the baby boom generation finds itself in the throes of middle age, often suffering from obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other maladies, it goes without saying that there is a crucial need for detailed information about the risks of heart attacks and strokes. Christian Wilde has extensively researched these risks and presented, in layman's terms, a wealth of information that should benefit anyone who is or may be a candidate for these conditions - which really includes all of us. Mr. Wilde's writing style as a patient-advocate is both entertaining and motivating, as he educates the reader about heart attacks and strokes and the traditional medical thinking and treatments. Perhaps more importantly, he reveals what lies on the frontier, which is frequently not always known even to the patient's physician. It only makes sense that the patient should be more involved in his or her own health care when it can be, literally, a matter of life or death. This important book encourages the patient to become intimately involved in this process, rather than merely a peripheral figure on the sideline who may soon become merely another statistic. This book may save lives, which cannot be said about many books on the market.

The best single resource for heart & stroke.

Very impressive! This is an valuable and illuminating book, which is solidly endorsed by many major medical specialists including MDs from UCLA and the MAYO Clinic. The book covers a wide latitude of treatments, including several practical state of the art cutting edge approaches. Much of the material does not appear elsewhere in my library of eleven other books on heart and stroke prevention and therapy. The writing is exceptionally clear without compromising the valuable material. Breakthrough technologies are well documented. I have found no other source which contains both the breadth and the thoroughness of information that I found here. This book is over 400 pages long. I recommend this book as a must have to anyone who has a history of heart or coronary disease, or stroke in their family history. This is the best single book I know of on this subject.
