Overview

Sheltered from sorrow, innocent young Pearl thrives in the sunshine of a loving home... except for the haunting nightmares of her earliest years, and the dark family secrets she worries will one day shadow her destiny... Raised in a New Orleans mansion filled with kindness and laughter, Pearl dreams of becoming a doctor. With all the finest families wishing her well, her high school graduation party is almost as festive as Mardi Gras itself. But still, she fears that she will never know the essence of romantic passion, or her family's buried secrets. Yet her summer job in an elegant old hospital is fascinating... and an experienced intern is eager to share his friendship with her. But the sultry Louisiana heat cannot dispel her family's sinful legacy, the snakelike treachery of a man who threatens Pearl's innocence, or an awful portent of disaster. After a cruel accident befalls one of Pearl's twin brothers, the bayou that seized him beckons to Ruby, who flees, tormented, back to her Cajun roots. Pearl's faith in her mother abides, but she cannot hold back her tears when her other brother falls deathly ill, and her father retreats into his own bourbon-soaked world. Pearl's dreams of success swirl away with the hurricane winds, and she journeys to the swamps in search of her mother and the shocking truth of her heritage. In the warm embrace of a gentle Cajun man, she discovers a blessed refuge. But, until the storm clouds clear, Pearl cannot savor the springtime sweetness that always, always seems beyond tomorrow...

Meet the Author

V. C. Andrews

One of the most popular authors of all time, V.C. Andrews has been a bestselling phenomenon since the publication of her spellbinding classic Flowers in the Attic. That blockbuster novel began her renowned Dollanganger family saga, which includes Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, and Garden of Shadows. Since then, readers have been captivated by more than fifty novels in V.C. Andrews' bestselling series. V.C. Andrews' novels have sold more than one hundred million copies and have been translated into sixteen foreign languages.

Biography

"The face of fear I display in my novels is not the pale specter from the sunken grave, nor is it the thing that goes bump in the night," V. C. Andrews once told Douglas E. Winter. "Mine are the deep-seated fears established when we are children, and they never quite go away: the fear of being helpless, the fear of being trapped, the fear of being out of control."

Andrews's novel Flowers in the Attic launched the popular genre sometimes dubbed "children in jeopardy" -- stories about young people abused, lied to, and preyed upon by their evil guardians. The author's own childhood was not nearly so lurid, though it did have an element of tragedy: As a teenager she had a bad fall, which resulted in the development of bone spurs. A botched surgery, combined with arthritis, forced her to use a wheelchair or crutches for the rest of her life.

Andrews lived with her mother and worked as a commercial artist until the 1970s, when she began to write in earnest. Most of her early stories and novels went unpublished (one exception was "I Slept with My Uncle on My Wedding Night," which appeared in a pulp confession magazine). Finally, in 1979, Flowers in the Attic made it into print. The book soared to No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list and was followed by two equally successful sequels, Petals on the Wind and If There Be Thorns. Critics weren't always kind -- a Washington Post reviewer wrote that Flowers in the Attic "may well be the worst book I have ever read" -- but that didn't matter to millions of Andrews's readers, who devoured her gruesome fairy tales as fast as she could pen them.

As E. D. Huntley points out in V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion, Andrews's novels fit neatly into the "female Gothic" tradition, in which an innocent young woman is trapped in an isolated mansion and persecuted by a villain. Andrews's own contribution was to take some of the themes implicit in early Gothic novels -- incest, sexual jealousy, and obsession -- and make them sensationally explicit in her works.

As most of her fans know by now, V. C. Andrews died in 1986, but new V. C. Andrews books keep popping up on the bestseller lists. That's because the Andrews estate hired a ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman, to continue writing books in the late author's style. Andrews's heirs have been cagey about just how much unfinished work she left behind when she died, but testimony during a 1993 tax case suggested that Andrews had only completed a portion of Garden of Shadows, the eighth book (out of more than 50) published under her name.

Still, even if the vast majority of "V. C. Andrews" books weren't actually written by V. C. Andrews, many of her fans are happy to have her tradition carried on. Neiderman has drawn on Andrews's novels, notebooks, and drawings for inspiration. "Don't make this sound weird," he once said in a Washington Post interview, "but sometimes I do feel possessed." To the original V. C. Andrews, who believed in precognition and reincarnation, it probably wouldn't sound weird at all.

Good To Know

Andrews wrote nine novels before Flowers in the Attic, including a science fantasy titled The Gods of the Green Mountain. Later, when she was a bestselling novelist, she wanted to try her hand at different kinds of fiction, but her publisher discouraged her. "I am supposed to stay in this niche, whatever it is, because there is so much money in it," she told Douglas Winter. "I mean, I have tapped a gold mine and they don't want to let go of it. I don't like that, because I want to branch out."

Though V. C. Andrews went by the name Virginia, her birth name was Cleo Virginia Andrews, not Virginia Cleo Andrews. She had planned to publish her books under the name Virginia Andrews, but her first publisher printed Flowers in the Atticas the work of "V. C. Andrews" in hopes that the gender-neutral name would make the book appealing to male readers.

    Landry Series....

Hidden Jewel kept my attention just as much as the rest of the Landry Series. Once you start one of V.C. Andrews Series you just have to continue reading, you never know what turn the story might take. This is a great book to read when you want to sit down & enjoy an easy read.

    Amazing Novel!

I took one star off because two very minor details bothered me about Pearl in this book.

First, it bothered me when Pearl would speak so harshly to her father to get him to snap out of his senses. Not because I didn't feel he deserved it, but rather because I felt Ruby deserved some of that very same tough love on many occasions too & Pearl always bit her tongue with her & was showed her much more compassion. It just didn't seem fair to Beau. If she was this way with the both of them when they both needed it, I wouldn't be mentioning this.

Secondly, I thought it was silly how she was supposed to be so logical & reasonable, yet convinced herself she was in love with Jack. Now I adored Jack & all. He was swoon-worthy, but seriously, how long had she known Jack before she decided they were fiercely in love? Three days? Four? It showed that while she did mature a lot, she was still very naive in terms of love. Three days is not enough time to build such a strong foundation with someone. That takes time to build. But other than that, it was an amazing novel.

    I loved this drama

I loved this book as well as the 4 books preceeding it. This book is very dramatic and suspensful, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Although, I love all of V.C. Andrews's books.

A stay a home mom in Louisiana

I loved this book. I have read it quite a few times. I've read the whole series a few times through. If i want to read a book, I grab for this series. And once I start reading it, I can't put it down. When i sit down to read this series, I will finish the book in a day or two. This series, is so intersting and full of live. I get so involved with reading it, it seems at times, it is like a real life story. I put myself in there shoes in my mind, almost like you want this kind of life. Not everything that has happened in the book, but the good parts. Where Pearl wants to be a doctor, her dreams. Your dreams almost seem like you want them to be true. That to me is how this book and series is like.

    Awsome#4

I thought Pearl was a true hero. She had to take on the role as mother to her sick brother when things get too tough for her mother to handle. She is just as bit as strong as her mother. She knows her goals and does everything she can to continue them. I loved this book.

    The same

I have to say i have read and reread many many VC andrews books. I loved the first series but when i read the Landry series and then the Logan series i noticed something. They all talk about a girl who gets taken from her home, her dad either dies or isnt there. Her mother runs away or dead. She goes from rags to richies. Falls in love with her brother. Has some type of talent and improves it. Then goes through these horrible trageties, has an evil step mom or grandma. Someone is/has dead/died or hidden in an institution. She finally gets to fall in love with her 'broher or cousin' and finds she's pregnant and then life comes to them as they take it. Now do any of her books sound the same?? I mean i love the writing dont get me wrong it lets you envision so much and feel and fantise what you yourself desire but honestly the storylines suck. Can for once the writing not involve a half brother she loves or whoever..and for once can she unveal a 'secret' but have her father and mother at her side without getting pregnant? And maybe make the evil whoever die or be defeated sooner? i dont know but honestly sometimes it does get old. After the Logan series i honeslty cant take anymore. Otherwise my intelligance is at stake.

    Actually make that 4.5 stars

This was an enthralling read. I was totally taken in by it, it was action packed and the pages flowed from one drama to the next. I didn't think the book dragged at any point. Must Read.
