Overview

Christianity is in crisis. Increasing numbers of people are "opting out." Why? Have recent discoveries in archaeology uprooted our faith in the Bible? Do the gospels no longer serve our modern, complicated lives? In The Hidden Power of the Gospels, Dr. Alexander Shaia moves beyond the typical approach to reveal an undiscovered truth that's been dormant for over one thousand years.

In the tradition of such writers as Thomas Moore and Don Miguel Ruiz, Shaia reveals how the recurring cycles of change, loss, enlightenment, and maturation are illuminated by the Bible's four gospels. Combining ancient Christian traditions, anthropology, and modern psychology, he reveals what has been in front of our eyes for two thousand years: that each of the gospels is centered on a different core metaphor and each focuses on a vital spiritual question.

Matthew begins with the question "How do we face change?" Mark poses the hard question of "How do we move through suffering?" John stirs and elevates the soul as he asks, "How do we receive joy?" And Luke moves us forward on the practical path, as he inquires, "How do we mature in service?" Shaia weaves these questions together in what he calls the quadratos journey, a recurring fourfold cycle that lives on as a constant companion throughout our lives.

Shaia unravels the divine inspiration of this mysterious sequence and links its ancient truths to universal, modern understandings. By using this lens, the gospels become practical guides for creating faith-filled lives that are relevant and useful in a time that is much more complex than village life millennia ago. In the sequence Shaia discloses, the gospels become the map for our never-ending spiritual journey.

While not everyone will be convinced by the book's claim to represent the new paradigm for inner transformation, The Hidden Power of the Gospels does offer a bridge over the conflicts that swirl around dogma and historicity. I Also Recommend:

A wonderful resource personally and professionally

I have read Dr. Shaia's previous books and now this one-volume work based on the same material. I reiterate what I have said before about this work, it is tremendously insightful and so very helpful for personal as well as professional work. As a minister, it is challenging to find new ways of telling the old, old story. While I have always enjoyed preaching, spending time with Dr. Shaia's work on the Gospels has enhanced my own spirituality and allowed me to share insights that make sense to the folks in the pews and the study groups. This is in contrast to much of the Historical Jesus material (what was principally taught in the seminary I attended) that while I found intellectually stimulating, didn't really make a difference in the lives of the people to whom I was ministering.

I am so pleased that many in the congregation seem to "get" what is being preached and lived through Dr. Shaia's work. In my spare time, I would love to assist with formally adapting this paradigm to speak to congregations in transition, for use in counseling people with significant live-altering circumstances, etc. It speaks to where we are as a nation in our current upheaval and fiscal crisis, as well as to the spate of name-calling and lack of respect that we find in the larger public milieu.
I really recommend that readers spend quality time with this book. It has renewed and deepened my own walk of faith and connection to the Spirit. Do more than read it - live it!

This is a fantastic book. But why is it not available on the Nook? It's available on the Kindle. Come on Barnes and Noble.
