Camouflage and protective coloration are the topics of this pop-up introduction to animal adaptations. Unfortunately, the pop-ups seem to overwhelm the text and the information is almost lost in a lush jungle of pull-tabs and lift-the-flaps. The paper-engineered environments fill each of the twelve pages of this small, square book. The text is superimposed over grasslands and lake surfaces. The settings are beautiful and the informative narration is brief and simply presented. But, the profusion of tabs (some are quite difficult to pull without tearing) and the abrupt action of some of the pop-ups makes for a nature book best suited to the most worldly and intrepid of young readers. 1999 (orig.
