Overview

One of the greatest of all modern electric blues guitarists and singers, Freddie King -- no relation to B.B. or Albert -- was a tremendous influence on a whole generation of 1960s rockers, including Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Leon Russell. Essential examples of King’s art can be found on this well-chosen sampler, ranging from such early classics as “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” and “San-Ho-Zay” to later releases on Shelter Records, exemplified by the vigorous “Going Down” and “Palace of the King.” In short, all the proof needed to confirm King’s status as a blues master can be found here.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ron Wynn
Although not always placed in the upper echelon of blues performers alongside the other Kings (B.B. and Albert), Freddie King was a dynamo. He was both a powerhouse, imaginative guitarist and a glorious, soulful vocalist who could belt out come-ons, shout with gusto or wail in anguish. His instrumentals were also catchy, usually simply structured but vigorous and vividly articulated. This tremendous 20-cut sampler includes familiar hits like "Going Down" and the title cut, plus the shattering "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" and the poignant "Lonesome Whistle Blues." The tracks are exquisitely remastered and intelligently sequenced, and the notes are informative and thorough without being academic or fawning.
