Overview

Like a chess master, he carefully weighs his next move . . . advancing slowly until he is sure he can capture his helpless pawn. For in his mind, there's no way to . . .

HIDE FROM EVILSean Flynn should feel lucky he's alive. But a betrayal by a close friend-and two years on death row-has left him feeling only numb. When his conviction was overturned, Sean retreated to a quiet woodland cabin, far away from prying eyes. There, he believed, the past couldn't come back to haunt him . . . until she showed up.

Overcome with guilt, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Krista Slater can't forgive herself for convicting an innocent man. But when another brutal murder reveals chilling, new facts about his case, she must turn to Sean for help. She's ready to face his anger, but the desire in his eyes ignites a need she's never felt before. Shadowed by danger, Sean and Krista uncover a twisted maze of deception and betrayal-all under the dangerous gaze of a cunning mastermind who will do whatever it takes to keep his evil secrets safe.

The first and second halves of this book felt a bit like two separate entities. I'll divide my thoughts accordingly: The first half moved slowly, with the two main characters in hormonal overdrive. They spent endless pages dancing around their physical attraction, then more endless pages giving in to that attraction. This read much more like romance/erotica than any form of suspense. I could - and did - skip ahead twenty or so pages without missing anything. The action picked up in the second half and the book became infinitely more interesting for me. This half read more like romantic suspense. The main characters behaved like grownups, rather than sex-addled teens. The plot unraveled and kept my attention. While the 'whodunit' was never in question, hanging out with the characters while they figured it out was entertaining.

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of Hide from Evil and I LOVED this book! Hide from Evil picks up a few months after Sean has been released from prison and exonerated from murder charges. He's living a solitary life, trying to put his life back together after 3 years in prison when Krista Slater shows up at his cabin. Krista doesn't think Nate Brewster was acting alone as the Slasher and she's determined find the truth. She hired a PI who led her to Jimmy Caparula who coincidentally commits suicide the night she's supposed to meet him. Krista arrives at Sean's cabin hoping he may know what Jimmy was going to tell her. The action starts not long after Krista's arrival at Sean's cabin. Soon they are running for their life and they don't know who they can trust. At the same time the chemistry between the two of them starts heating up. Krista's determination to find the truth and her vulnerability as various truths are uncovered starts breaking down the walls Sean built around himself in prison and re-awakens his protective insticts. I'm going to stop now so I don't give anything away. This is a great follow up to Beg for Mercy!

## This was just OK for me. I adored the first book "Beg for Mercy", but couldn't really get into this one. Biggest reason being the heroine. At one point in the story she was described as a strong, brave, moral badass. I have to strongly disagree. SPOILER ALERT: Not only did she send an innocent man (the hero) to prison but then dragged him into more trouble by turning him into a fugitive for killing a cop (innocent of course). Then she refuses to stay behind when everything goes down and of course once again almost gets the hero killed. For a deputy district attorney she is incredibly stupid, putting people in danger. Not to mention that incident in college with her girlfriend. Nope, not good enough for Sean. She ruined this story for me.

Krista Slater just cant let go of the feeling that there were more people involved than just Nate in the murders. She had hired a private PI to look into things when there is another murder and she knows it connected. Her continuing to look in to things has gotten a hit put out on her. She goes to the cabin where Sean has been hiding out since he got out of prison to try and convince him to help her but he wants nothing to do with her or her investigation until someone tries to kill them. This book wraps up alot of things from the first one but also leaves us hanging on Talia and Jack who's book is next.

King County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Krista Slater feels guilty over her successful prosecution of Sean Flynn in the murder of Evangeline Gordon (see Beg For Mercy). Flynn spent two years on death row, but recently was exonerated, freed, and compensated. Whereas everyone else involved including her boss want to forget the embarrassment, Krista feels a need to learn the truth so has spent her own money hiring private investigator Stew Kowalski to look into the case. Stew arranges for her to meet with Jimmy Caparulo whose testimony helped convict his pal Flynn. When she arrives for the meeting, Krista finds him dead; an alleged suicide she believes was a homicide. A second hit shakes Krista up as she wonders if someone is watching her. Sean has vanished from the betrayal of friends and the jurisprudence system as well as escaping from the fickle media who originally hung him two years ago but now call him a victim worthy of pity. However, Krista decides to visit him to ask for his help though she expects his refusal. To her shock, instead of loathing, he shows his attraction to her. As they team up, danger threatens their every step in seeking the truth. This is an exciting legal romantic thriller that starts off with a strong premise of having am ADA needing the wrongful convicted person assist her on her unofficial inquiry, but slows down with their tryst when they first meet. When the duet leaves his cabin, the story line accelerates into a super fast-paced suspense thriller. Readers will enjoy Jami Alden's entertaining tale as Krista and Sean learn you can run from evil, but can't really Hide From Evil. Harriet Klausner
