Margaret Brownley has quickly become one of my favorite authors! The first book I read of hers was A Lady Like Sarah, which I enjoyed, but it wasn't what I expected. I then read A Suitor for Jenny, which I positively adored! I loved High Button Shoes just as much.
In the 3 books I've read of hers, Margaret Brownley always writes strong female characters who are suffering from some deep, secret pain. Oftentimes, there are characters who seem to think they don't deserve to be happy, which I think is something we can fall into in our own lives. While that wasn't as much a theme in this book, I think it lends a certain realistic vulnerability to her characters. In High Button Shoes, Maggie was a strong woman who had suffered the loss of her husband. She and her children were traveling by stage to a new home, where one of the passengers professed to be the notorious Kissing Bandit, and was attached to a ball and chain, on his way to jail. Through a series of unforeseen circumstances, Maggie and the bandit are thrown together and must work together to protect her reputation, and his life.
This was a very enjoyable read, fairly lighthearted, but with plenty of intrigue to keep me turning the pages as fast as I could. I definitely recommend this book, as well as the Rocky Creek series as well.
