The promises made by the subtitle of this volume reveal a key element of Cooper's (Low-Fat Living) success as a writer and motivational speaker for the Lessons in Leadership lecture series: authority. Most of the suggestions offered are grounded in common-sense approaches to a healthy life, and Cooper's charismatic attitude is sure to be welcomed by those seeking relief from fatigue and lack of purpose. Cooper's program for accessing innate sources of energy begins by recognizing four sources of human energy: calm, active, sensory and heartfelt. According to Cooper, most people are running on the antithesis of these energy sources: tense, reserved, routine and surface energy. He explains in detail 21 "switches" to combat habits that reinforce the negative energy sources and turn on the positive ones. While exercise, relaxation techniques and a change in diet can be hard to implement, regardless of how "simple" they are made to seem, ideas drawn from neoteny, a field of research focusing on "growing young," introduce a playful sense of experimentation that is appealing. Frazzled career-aholics and those juggling the roles of breadwinner and parent may wonder if the answer to fatigue is as easy as laughing, yet Cooper forcefully makes a case for trying. Those who do may be surprised at how subtle shifts in perception and five-minute breaks can inject needed energy into their lives. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

Chapter One

Prime Yourself for Unparalleled Energy

Do you know what it's like to feel fully alive?

    Few people do.

What if you could experience your best day every day? What if you could consistently Feel as alert, vibrant, confident, focused, enthusiastic, and in touch with yourself as you do when you're at the peak of your energy?

When I challenge people with those questions, their first reply, invariably, is "Yes, I'd love it! Just show me how."

But I sense that they don't really believe that it's possible.

And I understand. The truth is, most of us don't believe that we can feel fully alive. Right now, you may be wondering, "Why do I feel tense or tired so often? Why am I so often `not there' for my spouse, my friends, or my children? What about those days that I just get through, as if I were treading water or climbing uphill?"

These are hardly unusual thoughts, especially in these times. And there are more questions like them—in fact, they're the very questions that are at the core of this book.

• Those mornings when I have to drag myself out of bed ... why? What's making me feel so sluggish and slow?

• When I lose my temper at drivers on the road, friends, family, people at work, what's really going on? Why do I get so impatient?

• What about those times when I can't remember things when my mind seems to drift, when I'm just overwhelmed with everything I have to do?

    Sound familiar?

Warring with Tiredness

Often, our sense of tiredness and frustration is deep. It affects our outlook, our health, our work, and our most important relationships. It gets to the point where we aren't eating well or sleeping well.

We don't have the energy to get even the minimal amount of exercise—20 to 30 minutes a day—that would help us live more vigorously and many years longer. (Yes, science has proved the benefits of exercise; but knowing this and doing something about it are two different things.)

Or what about the health problems that seem to sabotage our energy just when we need it most? We can't quite put our fingers on it, but we know that we have aches, pains, and discomforts that seem to get worse, not better. And we know the tension, too—the kind of tension that invades our backs, shoulders, jaws, or necks. Sometimes, that tension is so all-encompassing that it seems to travel all through our bodies, blunt our senses, and dim our minds.

Headaches that won't go away. Stomach upsets that doctors have told us are often stress-related. In fact, we've heard and read volumes about all the damage that stress-related problems can cause. But what's the good of knowing about stress if we don't have the energy to do anything about it?

The Cost of a Shrinking World

Not surprisingly, feelings of fatigue, frustration, and lack of good health have become universal in scope. Yes, our world is getting smaller, and the problems of hectic, fast-paced techno-living are being shared nationwide and worldwide. In the hundreds of seminars that I've held with thousands of men and women in the United States and around the world, I've discovered that many of us are engaged in a common search, one that's as compelling as the search for the Holy Grail.

What are we searching for? I believe that it can be summed up in a single word: energy.

How do we find it? Why do we lose it? When we don't have it, where does it go?

And why is energy so fickle? Sometimes, we get a burst of energy when we feel really low and in need. But there are other times—far too many—when it seems to desert us entirely.

Like anything that behaves in seemingly mysterious ways, the quality called human energy is something that many people regard as almost magical. "I just pray for more energy," people have told me. "I'm so tired all the time. I wish this feeling would go away." I call this if only ... thinking because it's as if wishing it were so would make it so.

There are those who confide in me, "I've tried everything. No matter what I do, I just don't feel like I'm 100 percent." As a 21st-century human being with all of the cares and concerns that you face every day, it's very typical for you to have these feelings.

But there's one thing that I don't believe about this force called human energy: I don't think that it actually does come and go in completely mysterious ways. On the contrary, my research has led me to the conclusion that human energy—yours and mine—is in many ways just as controllable as the energy that comes from an ignited spark or a burning flame.

There is extensive evidence that how energetic we feel is a major determinant of how happy, healthy, productive, and creative we are. It is surprising that, until now, so little attention has been paid to our energy levels and what drains them.

In Search of the Secret of Being 100 Percent Alive

"Compared with what we ought to be, most of us are only half-awake," said William James, M.D., Ph.D., Harvard University's noted philosopher and psychologist, at the beginning of the 20th century. "We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources. Our energy is far below the maximum."

Life, added Dr. James, is a "mass of small choices." Whether changed or ignored, he said, "these small choices bear us irresistibly toward our destiny."

How can we use more of what Dr. James calls our mental, emotional, and physical resources? How do we find our maximum energy?

As I started searching for those answers, I found that there were other questions that needed replies. I began asking, "Where does our energy come from?" and "How can we control it?" Almost immediately, I started to examine simple, day-to-day habits and routines.

Fortunately, I did not have to perform thousands of experiments to understand the impact of these routines. The experiments have already been done, and the body of scientific evidence has become extensive. Pursuing my search, then, has been a matter of sifting through all of the reports and listening very carefully to the testimony offered by dozens of experts and thousands of men and women.

Although this undertaking began with small questions like "Where does our energy come from?" before long I was face-to-face with far bigger issues, such as:

  • Why does our health often fail when our energy fails?

  • Why are feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and confusion linked to fatigue?

  • How can each of us, in our own way, realize our true potential for living?

Small choices, as Dr. James pointed out, are indeed linked to our destinies. But how can we make the small changes in our habits that will lead to the kinds of positive life changes that we seek in our destinies?

In Pursuit of Alertness

How can we be 100 percent alive not once in a while but most of the time?

I believe that, remarkably enough, you'll find in this book many of the answers to that crucial question.

These discoveries are not mine alone. They emerge from the bringing together of a vast number of scientific studies. Fascinating in their own right, these studies point to similar conclusions.

It has been my goal to find out where this energy is and how we can tap into it. Based on the existing research and everything we now know about human behavior and our ability to grow and change at every age, what are the switches that will help you and me get access to our inner energy resources? What lessons can be learned from neuroscience, physiology, psychology, biology, and a host of other scientific fields that we can apply to our day-to-day lives? And what do those lessons tell us about our most valuable resource, human energy?

I have pursued these questions precisely because they have meaning for you and me and the way we relate to those who are important to us and the way we live and work at our best during our daily lives.

And because I've focused on practical strategies and everyday solutions for busy people like you, I believe that you will find in this book the answers that you need, answers to questions such as:

  • After a hard day at work, how can I still have enough energy to give the best of myself to the people who are most important to me—my own family?

  • I'm exhausted at the end of the day, so how can I sleep more soundly to get recharged again?

  • I'm not old, but I feel tired. How can I act younger and feel younger?

  • All this stress is taking a toll on my health. How can I deal with that stress so it doesn't overwhelm me?

  • I eat when I'm not hungry and keep eating when I'm full! How can I eat for energy and stop feeling hungry?

  • What happened to my creative power? How can I bring it back to my household and my work?

  • How can I just let go and relax, without feeling guilty because I'm "giving up" or "letting people down"?

Use Skillpower, Not Willpower

This book will provide you With something far different from theory. It will give you practical tools and methods that you can use every day to gain access to your internal reserves of energy. Surprisingly enough, it will show you how to do that without working harder at anything. In fact, once you start a pattern of high-energy living, life often becomes easier.

There's no luck required. Just practical techniques—what I call switches. Each of these switches must be something that you and I can do easily in our daily lives to tap into the energy that is at the core of our beings. Each of these switches will take us one step closer to feeling 100 percent alive.

Chapter 2

Recognize the Four Kinds of Energy

I want to give you a quick overview of all the switches that you can use to turn on your energy. But first, I want to share some conclusions that I've come to based on an extensive review of worldwide research.

To put it in a nutshell, there isn't just one kind of human energy, as many scientists have contended for years. There are four kinds of essential energy: calm, active, sensory, and heartfelt. While these kinds of energy have much in common, they also have some distinct differences. Take a look at these complementary kinds of energy, and I think you'll agree that each is vitally necessary to our lives at work and at home and to our health and relationships.

The Concept of Calm Energy

Calm energy is the natural flow state in which you get a kick out of living.

If you have calm energy, you can work better than ever, with less strain. You don't feel like you're part of the rat race. You can make the most of your time and resources by better applying your talents, strengths, and passions.

In virtually every field of endeavor, those who achieve world records and breakthroughs are masters of calm energy. Those who achieve great acts of creativity also know the meaning of calm energy. But you don't have to be an Olympic athlete, a computer whiz, or a master composer to benefit from calm energy. It is a state that each of us can reach and sustain in our own unique way, if we choose to.

What if you could always have the most fun and the least struggle while accomplishing more of whatever matters most to you? That's the experience of calm energy.

The Opposite: Tense Energy

The opposite of calm energy is tense energy. When you have tense energy, you're under the illusion that you feel just fine and, at times, quite vigorous. But that vigor comes from a surge of adrenaline, the same jolt of energy that would make you hypervigilant and tense when walking at the edge of a cliff. Or tense energy comes from the buzz of caffeine, the temporary lift that you get from a cup of strong coffee. Or it's triggered by anger or time urgency or stress, the kinds of pressures that can actually damage your health and performance.

Tense energy is a kind of fake energy. I call it fake because it doesn't really help you stay more alert or act more effectively. In fact, it interferes with the function of neurotransmitters, the brain-messenger chemicals that help you perform at your best. When you're operating on the reserves of this fake energy, you eventually collapse in a heap, tense and tired. Along the way, tense energy breaks down health and impedes healing.

Few Americans ever experience calm energy anymore, according to Robert E. Thayer, Ph.D., professor of biological psychology at California State University, Long Beach. Instead, we're trapped in a cycle of tense energy that leaves us falling far short of the lives that we could live. Not surprisingly, tense energy leads to tense tiredness, and both have become so common that they seem normal. They're not. When we're trapped by reliance on adrenaline and caffeine, we risk our health and well-being.

Where Active Energy Kicks In

Active energy is produced by motion. It is triggered and turned on by your brain's alertness switches.

Active energy is a primary source of physical pep and mental drive. It builds vital reserves of stamina and fortifies your ability to bounce back from difficult times and challenging situations.

When energy is generated by action in simple ways here and there throughout the day, you can lose excess body fat automatically, even while you sleep. As you increase active energy, you also improve your metabolism, the processes of making new energy molecules in your brain and body.

When the switches of active energy are turned on, your metabolism is naturally higher, as is your ability to burn off excess fat and stay healthier during stressful times.

The Opposite: Reserved Energy

The opposite of active energy is reserved energy. Are you driving instead of walking? If so, you're reserving your energy rather than using it. Are you sitting instead of standing? Sitting reserves energy. Are you watching sports on television instead of playing catch or gardening? Chalk that up as reserved energy rather than active energy.

Putting our time into reserved energy has become the predominant pattern for almost half of all Americans. But there are ways to change this pattern, as I will explain in this book.

From hour to hour, your active energy must be switched on. Your metabolism relies on every one of the small but crucial signals that you give it. If that energy remains in reserve, if it doesn't get switched on, your overall vigor and vitality noticeably wane.

Feeling Your Sensory Energy

Sensory energy is the primary energy that enables you to soak up more of life's richness by reaching out with your senses--not just the traditional five senses, but the dozens of others that have been discovered by scientists. Use your sensory energy, and you literally engage with life.

Do you ever feel like you're going through the motions? Tapping into sensory energy, you move beyond that zone. You savor your experiences more fully. Sunsets are richer. The stars are brighter. A child's smile means more. You notice the uniqueness in others and more fully sense the value of the efforts that they are making. You feel more present, and you're more aware of everything that's happening around you, because all of your senses are alert during every waking moment.

When you have sensory energy, you achieve a rare level of exceptional attentiveness to people and possibilities. This can help you in many ways. A child reacts immediately and positively to a parent who has sensory energy. Colleagues at work will instantly pick up on the energy. In fact, sensory energy happens to be one of the most sought-after traits for creative insights and successful leadership at work.

Sensory energy is essential to longevity and to "growing young," according to Ashley Montagu, Ph.D., professor in the department of anthropology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Marian Cleeves Diamond, Ph.D., neuroanatomist at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Enriching Heredity: The Impact of the Environment on the Anatomy of the Brain. In essence, the more sensory energy you produce, the more you are naturally inclined to learn and to stretch your senses beyond all the boundaries that may have limited you in the past. As a result, your brain's unused or little-used pathways light up.

By living more fully, you turn back the common aging process. Over the course of a lifetime, the average person may use only 1Ú10,000 of their brainpower (far less than the 1Ú10 that was considered the rule of thumb for many years). Yet when you tap into sensory energy, your brainpower never stops growing--no matter what your age.

The Opposite: Routine Energy

The opposite of sensory energy is routine energy. This is, quite simply, being in a rut. Perhaps there's some pleasure and security to routine energy. But as much as you may crave it, routine energy contributes to a stunted view of life's possibilities, and, at the same time, promotes premature, accelerated aging. You may not even notice this because everyone around you may be going downhill fast too. Worse, when you operate on routine energy, a lot of the fun goes out of living.

Heartfelt Energy--Straight from the Heart

Heartfelt energy is what awakens and empowers your deepest drive for a meaningful life and for strong, mutually significant relationships. This energy is literally electric. Your body's trillions of cells are energized by huge electrical fields driving vast currents through tiny molecular structures--motors, pumps, gates, switches, and chemical factories that together make you alive. At the center of this energy dynamo is your heart.

It's natural to have heartfelt energy that's directed toward your spouse or children. But heartfelt energy has the potential to reach beyond, to all your efforts and interpersonal relationships, including those at work.

When you have heartfelt energy, you're also engaged in a profound and lasting search for your calling, for the ways that you contribute the most to the world and make the greatest difference.

With heartfelt energy comes the building of character. When heartfelt energy is absent in someone, we sense in that person a shallowness or emptiness, despite an outer semblance of fitness or success. Heartfelt energy is the primary wellspring of courage and commitment. It enables you to live your values and vision, rather than just talk about them.

Heartfelt energy is also the central factor in social-support systems that have been linked to faster healing, strengthened immunity, and longevity. Heartfelt energy prompts a heightened degree of empathy, the vital ability to be intimate and trusting with others. And the benefits of that positive trait go beyond family relationships. Empathy is the most vital practical trait in a leader, according to Peter Drucker, Ph.D., professor of social sciences at Claremont Graduate School in California. This suggests the benefits of taking this positive energy to the workplace.

Experiments show that the heart's energy, in the form of electromagnetic signals, is transmitted to every cell of the body and then emanates outward. Remarkable power and influence are generated by this energy field of the heart. Electrophysiological changes in feelings transmitted by the heart have been detected up to 5 feet away, according to studies published in the American Journal of Cardiology. Further studies measure the heart's energy field at 10 feet away.

It's intriguing to consider that the boundaries of our bodies aren't as clearly defined as we once thought they were. It's likely that in promising new areas of physical-science research, we'll begin to find further explanations for some of the phenomena that I call heartfelt energy.

The Opposite: Surface Energy

The opposite of heartfelt energy is surface energy. People with surface energy may be blessed with Hollywood smiles and schmoozing words, but the energy is self-centered and shallow. They pretend to care rather than actually care. They feign honesty and fake commitment. But ultimately, when there's only surface energy and no heartfelt energy, relationships are doomed to fizzle. Many people powered solely by surface energy find themselves at a loss for a sense of higher purpose and meaning in their lives and work.

Sources and Switches

Calm, active, sensory, and heartfelt energy are the kinds of energy that I have identified in my research. But just knowing about these four kinds of energy doesn't answer the question that we're all asking: "How can I automatically turn on this human energy so that I can feel 100 percent alive?"

There is a way--one that's both practical and scientifically based--to crack the code. All it takes is a willingness to test some everyday strategies and practical techniques that give you access to your deepest human-energy sources.

In fact, there are 21 switches that you can use any time, in any way, to give you more of the energy that you need. These switches are available to all of us, no matter what our ages, lifestyles, or professions.

The "ID Your Energy Blockers" quiz and guidelines on the following pages will guide you to the switches that may prove most helpful to you, personally. On the first two pages, you'll find 34 questions that will help you identify your personal energy needs. It won't take long to answer those questions. Then, turn to page 18 for specific recommendations about the parts of this book that may be most likely to help you.

ID Your Energy Blockers @ST1:In this book, you'll find 21 switches that can help you turn on the four different kinds of energy--calm, active, sensory, and heartfelt.

But which of these switches is most useful to you? What kind of energy can do you the most good? Where are your greatest energy needs?

To answer these questions, simply take the quiz below. If you don't want to mark up the book, photocopy these pages.
