Overview

A weekend competition turns deadly in this seventh Raine Stockton Dog Mystery.

Dog trainer Raine Stockton and her happy-go-lucky golden retriever Cisco have been looking forward to the opening weekend of AKC competitive agility all winter. They travel to the low country of South Carolina to compete against some of the top dogs in the southeast for blue ribbons, squeaky toys, and perhaps even that elusive title of High in Trial. But even in this carefree atmosphere of high-spirited dogs and dedicated owners ambition runs high, and when one of the competitors is found brutally murdered it begins to look as though corruption might have penetrated even this last bastion of decency and sportsmanship, the AKC.

While Raine and Cisco stalk a killer, a twenty-year old mystery is unfolding back home that will have devastating consequences for Raine and those she loves, and every hour that passes brings a deadly threat closer.

"An exciting, original and suspense-laden whodunit... A simply fabulous mystery starring a likeable, dedicated heroine..."
--Midwest Book Review

"A delightful protagonist...a well-crafted mystery."
--Romantic Times

"There can't be too many golden retrievers in mystery fiction for my taste."

The storyline is exciting. Unfortunately, these are nothing but expensive short stories. By the time one wades through Raine's history and that of her friends, the reader is left with very few pages of actual story. I would have liked to read the Ladybug series. I'm not about to pay even more money for what may be the same.

Donna Ball's High in Trial didn't fail! I loved it. If you are a dog lover, you really need to check out her Raine Stockton seriesso you can fall in love with Cisco. My biggest complaint about the Raine Stockton series is that there aren't enough & the books always end. It was a well crafted mystery that didn't come unraveled & I didn't figure it out. As always with this series, I recognized dog behaviors I have seen in my own canine companion. Cisco always comes alive for me & makes me laugh out loud. It was fun reading about the trials because I have two friends who show--one shows Aussies for agility & one for show. If you are a dog lover, grab the first in the series & get hooked like I did! .

Donna Ball has, again, created a believable plot along with her usual cast: Raine Stockton, who lives in the Smoky Mountains with her trained tracking dog, Cisco; Cisco, a lovable Golden Retriever who tests Raine's patience at times; Buck, her ex-husband, now the local sheriff; Miles, Raine's current love interest; Maude, Raine's partner in dog training and part owner of their kennel. In addition, there is the usual group of new characters. Raine and Cisco participate in an agility trial. Cisco is his usual exuberant self, ready to please Raine but distracted by his new BFF Brinkley (another Golden). One of the human participants at the trial is murdered. How is Raine involved? Why was the human murdered but her dogs not harmed. Ball is an excellent mystery author. She sustained the plot and pulled the reader along to the end. And what an end! This is a book for mystery readers, dog lovers, and agility trial participants. Do not miss!
