Children's LiteratureIf you think about modern American soldiers for a few minutes you may well conjure up an image of them gathered near or driving in a Humvee. This multi-purpose transport vehicle is seemingly omnipresent in American military actions. However, as the current Iraq War has shown, Humvees are vehicles with both advantages and vulnerabilities. In that ongoing conflict, Humvees were found to be limited in terms of their armor protection. Yet, despite the limitations that modern asymmetrical warfare has revealed regarding the Humvee, it remains a valuable element of American military might. Readers of this text are afforded a glimpse of the armament, design, tactics, and limitations of the Humvee. In addition, the tightly-developed text is illustrated by a collection of colored pictures of Humvees on the battlefield and in motion. Youngsters are given a good exposure to the diverse nature of this contemporary replacement for the tried-and-true Jeep. Therefore, this is a book that will capture the interest of readers who gravitate toward military hardware or machinery. Although this book does not touch upon the human cost of warfare, the author at least does indicate limitations in the Humvee that have cost American soldiers dearly. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
