Scarface, on his way back to a clan stronghold after assassinating a legate, meets and falls in love with a woman even more ruthless than he. To win her, he must reunite an empire and create a kingdom. His only allies are his wits, his sword, and the power in his scars -- black marks like the taloned finger prints of a demon.

To achieve his goals, he must deal with old enemies, gods of dubious worth, and his own family -- who may be the most dangerous of all.

While I was expecting a fantasy realm full of the typical characters, I was sucked into a world that was as rich in plots and intrigue as it was a story of change. I want to nail the plot down as a "coming of age" but the story of Scarface/Morgan is well beyond that. One, he is much older than those, two it's more of a "coming to terms" story than anything. James caught the essence of one man's epiphany and put it into the most excellent grouping of words I have read in a while. I am floored by how much this story touched me. I am now a firm fan. Now to read Taking Hope....

A refreshing departure from formula driven plots with cardboard characters. Actually had me wondering what was coming next. The protaginist is not always noble, but I liked him. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.
