Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up -Haruno, a star softball player in middle school, decides to put the same determination and effort she once put into athletics into finding a boyfriend in high school. In order to do this, she pesters Yoh, an attractive older boy, until he agrees to act as her "love coach." Haruno eagerly takes in his advice but she persists in reading teen magazines in the hopes of charting a faster path to love. Yoh grows frustrated with her faith in the magic of fashion magazines and her refusal to give up her athletic clothing. Kawahara uses a pen-and-ink style similar to that in Yoko Kamio's Boys over Flowers (VIZ Media). Lightly peppered with the message that girls shouldn't have to change themselves in order to please a man, High School Debut is standard fare for younger manga readers. With a clean plot and only the stereotypical female temper tantrum for added drama, it's a good purchase for schools and libraries.-Sarah Krygier, Solano County Library, Fairfield, CA

easy, fun read that keeps you hooked =)

okay, this series is one of the best manga series i've *ever* read. it's cute and funny, and the characters are so well developed and unique. high school debut is very memorable. at first it may seem kind of silly and unbelievable - i mean, what freshman girl asks a hot sophomore guy (who she barely knows) to coach her in being popular with guys? yeah...no one. well, except for haruna. haruna was a sporty girl all thru middle school - star pitcher of her softball team. she really gave her all to softball, like she gives her all to everything she does. now that she's in high school, she put her softball days behind her and is really looking forward to first love. yoh, on the other hand, has no good memories of being on a school sports team...he played on his middle school basketball team and dated the team manager - a girl in his grade. but when he hurt her feelings unknowingly, she and the whole team isolated him for the rest of his time there. thus he thinks girls are flighty and annoying and he really hates them. but even tho yoh says harsh things and seems kind of rough around the edges, he does have a kind heart deep inside. i really recommend this series to anyone who likes a sweet, funny, drama filled love story.

    Surprised

A tomboyish girl name Karuna, wants to find a boyfriend now that she's starting high school. So she enlists the help of a student name Yoh to help her. Well this was a surprisingly good start to the series. I like the main character and one scene in particular made me smile. Definitely reading more of this series.

    Such a great story!

The art is amazing and so is the story! It's so cute, when you read the first one, you just can't stop with the series. My friend let me borrow her books, eventually I just ended up buying the series, and I'm always psyched for the next one to come out.

    Completed the series.

Let me just say one thing. Awesome. The entire story from vol.1-13 is amazing. When you're reading this you find moments that you van easily relate and the characters are very realistic in the way they talk, think, and feel and I can guarantee that you will fall in love the different outfits each character changes into on a day to day basis which makes it more realistic because the students are not seen wearing one or two sets of clothes for the entire series but they wear something different each day. It may not seem like a big deal but it really does help to give it a more realistic feel. And if you are a big fan of sweet but not overdone romances then this is the manga for you. While it's romantic it also has enough comedy to keep you laughing and at the same time it has enough serious points as well so the overall feel and storyline is well balanced. Also, not only do the main characters have great personalities and well developed but the supporting characters are amazing as well. Normally, in a manga you'll notice that not enough personality is given to the supporting characters that are supposed to be the close friends and if they do have personality, you don't feel much of a connection with them because not enough attention is paid to them in their own lives but in High School Debut you really feel connected with every character main and supporting which is wonderful in a manga. All in all ,this is a great manga from start to finish and be always be excited for the next volume and it'll leave you wishing for a 2nd installment of the series. This is probably one of the best shojo beat manga in my collection. I would definitely recommened this manga to anyone who is a fan of romantic-comedies mixed with drama.

Haruna's just started high school and she's looking for fall in

Haruna's just started high school and she's looking for fall in love. Up until this point she's put all her focus in softball but now she wants a change. She enlists the help of Yoh to help her become more attractive in the hopes of finding a boyfriend.

Haruna has some really bad fashion sense. She wears clothes that are totally wrong for her muscular body and is really awkward around the opposite sex. So suffice to say, Yoh has his work cut out for him. He was once very popular, but that popularity also alienated him.

This is the beginning of the story and it doesn't really progress too far. Yoh's helping her find her own look which is proving to be difficult with Haruna's sense of style. It's looking like it will be cute story. I also like the artwork and find the characters to be distinguishable (which I sometimes have a problem with when it comes to Manga). This is definitely a cutsey manga that I look forward to reading more of.
