Barnes & Noble
The original High School Musical soundtrack has sold more than 7 million copies in the United States and was the bestselling album of 2006. Disney hopes to repeat that success with High School Musical 2. The accompanying soundtrack features the anthemic single "What Time Is It," which reunites original cast members Corbin Bleu ("Chad"), Monique Coleman ("Taylor"), Zac Efron ("Troy"), Lucas Grabeel ("Ryan"), Vanessa Hudgens ("Gabriella"), and Ashley Tisdale ("Sharpay"). The song is Disney's first commercially released single in more than a decade.

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Making household names out of its cast -- not to mention lots and lots of money -- High School Musical was too successful not to spawn a second installment. While the original movie had a surprising amount of personality and sweetness, as well as songs that actually sounded like they could have appeared in a high-school musical, its glitzy sequel feels more like High School Musical: The Ride. Likewise,High School Musical 2's soundtrack is louder and brasher, operating under the principle that turning up the volume will distract from the fewer, and less inspired, songs here. Disney found more stories to tell about Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Chad, and Taylor, and more songs for them to sing -- High School Musical 2's plot revolves around summer vacation, a love triangle, and, of course, a talent show -- but this soundtrack feels a lot closer to Radio Disney than show tunes. "Gotta Go My Own Way," a bittersweet duet between Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, features the gentle beats and acoustic guitars that have been mainstays of teen pop ballads since the late '90s. The shift to an even more conventional, pop-friendly sound isn't really surprising, especially considering that nearly all of High School Musical's stars released solo albums in the wake of the movie's success. That includes Ashley Tisdale, who returns as thwarted musical theater queen Sharpay and is the soundtrack's star. A childhood musical theater veteran herself, Tisdale's chirpy, slightly saccharine voice is perfect (and sometimes, perfectly annoying) on songs like "Fabulous," a piece of diva-tastic pop that could also appear on the soundtrack to My Super Sweet 16. However, her turn on the Polynesian-flavored "bonus" track "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a" crosses the line from cute to far too cutesy, and could be the final straw for listeners past their early teens. A few of High School Musical 2's songs balance story and character-intensive lyrics with memorable melodies as nimbly as the original movie's music did, including "Work This Out," which finds the gang livening up their summer jobs, and "I Don't Dance," which turns big-band brass, a melody borrowed from Prince, and a stomp section into a jock jam. Meanwhile, "You Are the Music in Me" is a big, sweeping love song that sounds fairly funky and young while nodding to show tune traditions. High School Musical 2's lack of inspiration really shows on its bigger numbers: the soundtrack closes with "Everyday" and "All for One," two wannabe rousing songs that blend into one big, bland singalong. While it suffers from a bit of sequel-itis, the soundtrack isn't outright bad; too much is at stake for Disney for it to be terrible. High School Musical 2 is big, bright, and energetic. It's tailor-made for kids to sing and dance along with, and they might not notice that it's not quite as fresh or imaginative, relatively speaking, as the original was.
Billboard - Gary Graff
The music again skews toward hip-hop beats and hooky pop melodies, and such tracks as "Work This Out," the sports-themed "I Don't Dance," "Bet on It" and "All for One" make you feel like Backstreet's not only back, but never left.

    Not bad

I would have to say that this CD (and the movie) is MUCH better than the first one. In this CD, Zac Efron actually sings, instead of Drew Seely. The songs I like most are What Time Is It, Fabulous, Gotta Go My Own Way, You are the Music in Me (Sharpay Version), and All for One. These songs have a great beat to it except for Gotta Go My Own Way, which shows Troy and Gabriella breaking up.

    A reviewer

I really don't think that high school musical is all that. i don't know why everyone is getting soo worked up about it. it's not even that good. the music is ok, but i think that zac efron really needs to learn how to lip sync cuz there is no way he's singing that.along with vanessa. it's not good.

High School Musical 2 is back again with a BANG!

The High School Musical Cast is back again with an all new movie and an all new soundtrack. Packing on all new songs, the cast really steps up a knotch in the music and has learned how to improvise with their voices in the music. From songs of love ("You are the Music in me") to songs of self- examination ("Bet on it" & "Gotta go my own way") to songs of fun (" All for one, "HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA`A," , "I don`t dance" , "Fabulous" & "What time is it?") to songs of teamwork ("Work this out" & "Everyday") this CD has it all! Any fan of the first High School Musical will be overly impressed!

A New Twist on High School Musical

The soundtrack for High School Musical features a different side of the High School Musical Cast but is still definitely up to standard. I really liked "I Don't Dance" and "You are the Music in Me" while "Bet on It" and "Gotta Go On My Way" really shows how Troy and Gabriella's characters are dealing with their lives which also helps the music seem a lot more realistic and a bit easier to attach yourself into the lyrics. "All for One" is a great wrap-up song to the album, which is really similar to "We're All in This Together" in the first soundtrack and of course "What Time is It" is a great summertime song. I can't wait to see how the movie turns out on Friday!!

    Why I love HSM

High School Musical isn't just another musical, believe it or not. I know that it seems shallow and superficial but as you begin to think about it, so does high school. Everybody's been in these situations before... the new kid, shoved unwittingly into the spotlight, or the jock, doing something they've never done before. It's not just another musical about teenage angst and love where everything turns out O.K in the end. It's actually surprisingly realistic.
