High Standards

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Altoist Jesse Davis, whose tone is most influenced by Cannonball Adderley but who has a conception of his own, performs six standards (some of which are rarely performed), one song by trombonist Robert Trowers and three of his own boppish pieces. With Nicholas Payton contributing blazing trumpet solos in the style of Freddie Hubbard, Davis, Trowers and the rhythm section sound quite inspired. Among the highlights are "Rush Hour," Junior Mance's "Jubilation," "On A Misty Night" and an up tempo version of "Strike Up The Band." This set is easily recommended to hard bop fans.
