Organized under the auspices of the European Federation of Corrosion, the May 1996 symposium held on a Mediterranean island near Marseilles was part of a series of colloquia devoted to environmental behavior for materials and coatings in aggressive environments, areas of vital economic concern for the transportation, energy generation, and chemical processing industries. The proceedings break with the usual (and admittedly sometimes tedious) format by arranging the 115 contributions by 308 authors to follow the life cycle of materials under assault by a corrosive environment: from diagnosis of the attack, to the identification of the problems of materials degradation, and solution approaches. The resulting chapters focus on: fundamentals of high temperature corrosion and special experimental technics, failure of the protective oxide, examples of the problem, overcoming these problems, the next step (thermal barrier coatings), and data banks (data generation, databases, and expert systems).
