I have read many books on this incredible battle, but, this one is indeed a 'classic' in the strictest sense of the word. It is readable and detailed. His description of the skirmish between the 24th Michigan and the 26th North Carolina on the first day of the battle is truly inspiring. Generals John Buford,Winfield Scott Hancock, James Longstreet and George Pickett come to life and seem very real and quite heroic. Finally, his conclusions in the last chapter as to the reasons the north won this battle are interesting and fair. There are many good books that look at the overall battle, but, this book from the late 50's belongs on any civil war or history buffs shelf. Was this review helpful?
