Children's Literature - Elisabeth Greenberg
In the third book of the “Merlin Mission” series, Jack and Annie travel through time in the Magic Tree House to discover the third secret of greatness. Where do they end up? On the banks of the Nile by the city of Thebes in search of Florence Nightingale. Annie knows Florence Nightingale as the famous founder of modern nursing, but when the children encounter Florence, she is not a nurse nor is she famous. Can this melancholy woman, guided by family expectations, possibly hold a secret to greatness? Jack and Annie leap into their adventure. Delegated to babysit a playful baby baboon, they follow Florence into the desert toward the tombs of Luxor. Koku, the baboon, runs away and Jack hurts himself in the chase, but Florence steps forward to help him and nurses Jack back to health. Her secret to greatness is not nursing, but something bigger than that, a secret that can fit into anyone’s life! Readers will enjoy finding out the Nightingale secret! Reviewer: Elisabeth Greenberg; Ages 8 to 12.
