Editorial Reviews

CM Magazine
"Jackson uses her considerable experience and storytelling skills to create an adventure set in what is often considered a magical world. With deft precision, she intertwines the magic of circus with the reality of what it takes to be a part of it. Then she weaves in intrigue. Her characters live real lives and have real dreams. And the uncertainties that beleaguer the young circus troupe are real...A fast-paced adventure that will appeal to any young reader who has dreamed of "joining a circus", and to those who like mystery. Highly Recommended."

"An engaging read...Zack is a sympathetic character who makes a surprising, endearing choice at the novel's close."
Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
Nothing else exists for teen circus performer Zack "Zen" Freedman when he is walking the high wire. Not his deceased parents, who caused Zack to have to leave the family ranch in Alberta to live with his aunt in British Columbia. Not his clown roommate Cubby, who seems to have it out for him. Not the small, yapping dog Pooch that his Aunt has dropped off for him at his summer stint in a youth circus. Not the wide-eyed gymnast Whitney or the yelling circus owner and ringmaster Sorelli. Like his idol Philippe Petit, nothing can break Zack's concentration, not even the screams from the audience below as a robbery takes place. Now Whitney's mom, as the victim of the jewelry theft, is threatening to pull Whitney out of the circus and shut down the whole operation. Zack is a prodigy performer, but if the missing diamond necklace isn't found soon, he may end up working in his aunt's produce shop. The police are conducting their own search, but Zack is suspicious of Cubby. And that annoying dog, that is even starting to grow on him a little, may just provide the clues he needs. Jackson peppers her story with interesting circus tidbits about juggling, wire walking, and circus lingo, creating a dynamic setting for her teen crime mystery. However, without a profound moral, current issues, or deep characters to which teens may personally relate, the book may be better suited for pleasure reading than a classroom assignment. While the story is a bit heavy-handed in suggesting certain clues, it does a nice job in subverting expectations by the end. The style is light and uncomplicated, well-suited for grade five and up. This book offers teens a quick, quirky and exciting read sure to inspire a new generation of circus lovers. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene

Zack loves being a wire walker, and his aunt, with whom he has lived since the death of his parents, is supportive of Zack and his skills. When Aunt Ellie's business takes her out of town, Zack is stuck caring for a new puppy that Ellie adopted. It's stressful keeping the pup hidden around the performing tents but nothing compared the the heat everyone is taking when a valuable necklace goes missing during a performance. If the thief isn't found, the circus will have to close. Zack suspects someone but will he be able to prove anything in time to save his job? A good hi-lo read on a topic that most teens have little knowledge of--working in a performance troupe. Nice wrap-up after the mystery is revealed.
