Gr 5-8-- In this sequel to So You Want to Be a Wizard (1983) and Deep Wizardry (1985, both Delacorte), Duane takes her young wizards, Nita and Kit, into the farthest reaches of space. Nita's younger sister, Dairine, plunges impetuously into wizardry, propelled not by the manual Nita and Kit found so convenient, but by a computer. An experienced hacker at age 11, Dairine discovers that her family's new computer comes equipped with a software wizard's manual that enables it to copy itself, shrink to pocket size, and transport Dairine across the universe. Alternate chapters follow rescue efforts by Nita and Kit. Reunited on a distant planet, the three children, together with beings Dairine and the computer have created, confront the Lone One, the biblical Lucifer, over nothing less than the salvation of the universe. Audacious in theme as L'Engle's time trilogy (Farrar), Duane's story is a homage to the science fiction of the 1950s, particularly Heinlein. The imaginative BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters) are drawn from this tradition, as is one of the best scenes in the book, a chase through a spaceport crowded with alien lifeforms. Although the plot keeps readers guessing, the narrative flow is interrupted by chunks of undigested information about computers and astronomy. Duane's vision never rises above the pop Jungian theology of the Star Wars films, to which she constantly refers. Recommended where readers have enjoyed the earlier books. --Margaret A. Nita went white with shock at the sight of Dairine. Dairine didn't care. "You're going to tell me everything," she said, and ran down the beach to distract her parents just long enough for Nita and Kit-also just changed back from a whale-to get back into their bathing suits. And after the noisy, angry scene with their parents that followed, after the house was quiet, Dairine went to Nita's room, where Kit was waiting, too, and let them tell her the whole story.

Wizard's manuals, oaths, wizardry, spells, quests, terrible dangers beyond the world, great powers that moved unseen and unsuspected beneath the surface of everyday existence and every now and then broke surface-Dairine was ecstatic. It was all there, everything she had longed for. And if they could have it, she could have it too. . . .

Dairine saw their faces fall and felt the soft laughter of the world starting behind her back again. You couldn't have this magic unless you were offered it by the Powers that controlled it. Yes, sometimes it ran in families, but there was no guarantee that it would ever pass to you. . . .

At that point Dairine began to shut their words out. She promised to keep their secret for the time being and to cover for them the best she could. But inside she was all one great frustrated cry of rage: Why them-why them and not me! Days later, when the cry ebbed, the frustration gave way to blunt, stubborn determination. I'll have it.     Hi

    Loved it! This was the addition of the third of my favorite characters in the series(Dairine, Kit, Nita, Ronan.) I absolutely love the mobiles, and the idea of using Logo as the Lone Power is awesome! Two thumbs up!

    Awesome.

    I read this book after the fourth one in the series so it wasn't that much of a surprise. Dairine cracks me up and I was surprised when I found out the theme 'Young Wizards' meaning the main characters also included Dairine along with Kit and Nita.

    slightly confrustrating, but still rather good

    i found this book to be ok, but i definatly liked the previous ones better. i found the ending a little confusing, though. nita's little sister turned out to be the main character, too, so that was a little dissapointing. the 'new manuel' idea was interesting though, especially in this day and age. i thought that this was a good book ,and i can't wait to see how the series turns out!! =)

    Callisto the Sorceress

    I loved this book. It was great. I wasn't too happy that the main charater was Dairine (I think she's a brat) but the overall book was excellent and you should definitely read it.

    Kelli, a BIG book freak!

    All the books in general deserve 5-stars. They were great! This book was really hard to put down after i started. Anyone who likes reading about Wizardry or magick,this is a good book for you.It is a great adventure story.

    Wizardry?

    I thought this book was one of the BEST in Diane Duane's series of wizard books. And recommend it to Harry Potter and wizardry fans. It was a really nice book and I enjoyed it a lot more than Deep Wizardry. When I was reading this book I learned so much and everything felt so real, it was unbelievable. It is a very captivating story and I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

    Gotta Love It!

    I love this book! High Wizardry is written beautifully. When Nita's younger sister Diarine becomes a wizard she travels to all different planets. It's enough just for Nita to put up with Diarine, but this?

    you gotta read this

    Nita's little sister becomes a wizard, and then heads out to mars and other planets on her own. With the Lone One chasing her, will Nita and Kit find her in time? Or will Dairine parish like so many other wizards facing the Lone One?

    A Must Read

    Nita's little sister has always been too smart, and now she's a wizard. When she disappeares in the museum, Kit and Nita find that she's gone to mars. They chase her around the universe hoping that they find her before the Lone One does.

    High Wizardy

    Nita and Kit take Nita's sister Darrine to the muesam. While they look at stuff in the space section, Darrine 'accedentally' goes to mars. When Kit and Nita find this out, naturally it's up to them to save her.

    High Wizardry

    This book is more about scientific stuff than the magic similar to Harry Potter and Tamora Pierce, but the plot is fairly simple and the book is very exciting. All in all, a worthy read.

    Chalk another one up for Daine Duane!

    Nita and Kit end up in a mad dash to catch up to Dairine, Nita's lil' sister and a new Wizard. If they don't catch up to her, she may end up like all those other children who never returned from their Ordeal. Will they be too late?

    no, don't waste time like I did........

    the the other books are much better. In all the books after it make a big deal out of it, and i dont get it! THe main idea was okay, but the details were way too confusing.
