Overview

The purpose of this study was to analyze the personalities and attitudes of two distinct groups of individuals in Texas public universities: White administrators in minority-serving institutions and minority administrators in predominantly White institutions. The intent was to determine if (a) minorities working in upper administrative positions in predominantly White institutions face acculturation and assimilation issues similar to those of their White counterparts working in minority-serving institutions; (b) the impact of race, assimilation, and acculturation had an impact on the two distinct groups when it concerns feelings of managerial influence and change; and (c) minority administrators feel intimidated by their surroundings, or if they face the challenges inherent to racial acculturation in dealing with their peers. An existing survey instrument, which was initially developed by Smith and Borgstedt in 1985 and later used by Louis in 2005, was utilized. Of the 987 survey instruments mailed, 323 were ineligible based on the fact that their race/ethnicity matched the institution type, 513 did not respond, and 34 did not wish to participate. This left a pool of 117 eligible participants, an 11.9% response rate. Chi-square analysis was conducted which indicated that both groups face similar acculturation and assimilation issues. The research also reflected that race, assimilation, and acculturation have little impact on both groups concerning feelings of managerial influence and change. Recommendations for further study include a review of the same groups in various geographical regions of the United States, a similar review of faculty or staff at similar institutions, and expansion of the study to include 2-year and private higher education institutions.
