Overview

FM rock deejay and private investigator Rick Shannon is back in a big way in the second novel of a series that began with the rollicking Radio Activity.

Highway 61 Resurfaced kicks off when a woman named Lollie Woolfolk sashays into the offices of Rockin' Vestigations and says she wants to find her long lost granddaddy, blues producer Tucker Woolfolk. Before it's over, Rick Shannon has crisscrossed the sweltering Mississippi Delta in search of the thread that connects a dead man in Yazoo City found with a fork stuck in his back to an old man known as Pigfoot Morgan who was just released from Mississippi State Penitentiary after serving fifty years for murder. Further complicating matters is the lovesick Crail Pitts, onetime Ole Miss football star who is driving around the Magnolia State with a noisy lawyer in his trunk, and Cuffie LeFleur, one of four generations of a cotton dynasty that may be on its last legs. In the end, everything points to one of the great mysteries in blues lore: whether Blind Buddy Cotton, Crippled Willie Jefferson, and Crazy Earl Tate ever recorded together. When Rick starts a rumor that he's found the tapes from the legendary Blind, Crippled, and Crazy sessions, a killer is sent to collect them and Rick starts singing the PI blues.

Editorial Reviews

Biloxi Sun Herald
“HIGHWAY 61 RESURFACED is every bit as much a page-turner as [Fitzhugh’s] first six books.”
CrimeSpree Magazine
“A fantastic read.”
Deadly Pleasures Magazine
“This is classic Fitzhugh, to complement the classic Rock and Roll. Highly recommended.”
Interview
“...a climax so rich you want to hear the tapes as much as the people hunting them down.”
Jackson Free Press
“... puts a shine on Delta Blues that would make Ace Atkins proud.”
New Orleans Times-Picayune
“...Fitzhugh draws especially fine, sensitive portraits of the guys who lived the blues, not just played them.”
New York Times
“Fitzhugh…really shows his artistry in his richly comic, warmly affectionate character studies.”
Time magazine
“Fitzhugh’s dialogue is as cool as a pitcher of iced tea, and his characters are just over the top...”
Marilyn Stasio
Fitzhugh, born and reared in Mississippi, has a belly full of feeling for the songs and legends of his Southern musical heritage. But where he really shows his artistry is in his richly comic, warmly affectionate character studies of battered old men with long experience in living -- not just playing -- the blues.
— The New York Times
Publishers Weekly
Some fine characterization helps offset an overly complicated plot in Fitzhugh's second mystery to star veteran disc jockey and rookie PI Rick Shannon (after 2004's Radio Activity). Now working at a radio station in Vicksburg, Miss. (and more into old blues than rock), Rick also heads Rockin'Vestigations, to which an attractive young woman who calls herself Lollie Woolfolk applies for help in finding her missing grandfather, Tucker Woolfolk, an old-time record producer. When Rick discovers Tucker dead, he has a murder case on his hands. Then Lollie disappears, and another gal claiming to be Lollie Woolfolk turns up. The eccentric, mostly elderly cast includes the members of the blues group BCC (short for Blind, Crippled and Crazy); a pill-crazy killer; a crooked, prejudiced and big-bellied white sheriff; and an innocent black man released from jail after doing 50 years for murder and ready for revenge. Providing comic relief is a sickly alley cat Rick befriends. A search for the old tape of a legendary blues session by BCC generates some suspense, even if its fate remains unclear. Fans of Radio Activity may be disappointed that Rick's detective work leaves him so little time behind the mike. Agent, Jimmy Vines. Author tour. (Apr. 12) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Bill Fitzhugh is the author of seven novels. He still has all of his original organs and plans to keep it that way until the very end, at which point he is willing to let the doctors divvy them up among anyone (with the exception of politicians) who might need them. However, he makes no promises about the quality of his liver. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and all of her organs.

First Chapter

Highway 61 Resurfaced
A Novel

Chapter One

Durden Tate was a wealthy man. His company had a lock on 80 percent of the specialty-fats-and-oils market for fast-food restaurants in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Durden Tate's company had achieved this extraordinary market share by creating a superior product, a frying fat based on a flavorful blend of deodorized palm oil and refined pork lard. Tru-Fry 2000, as it was known, boasted elevated oxidation resistance, a high smoke point, and true frying longevity. As a result, every time a donut, a catfish, or a basket of fries was lowered into a bubbling vat in this part of the country, the odds were good that it was Durden Tate's fat.

As part of his commitment to quality, Durden spent four days a week visiting restaurants that used his product. After ten years of sampling crispy-fried hash browns at breakfast, corn dogs and fried pies at lunch, and hush puppies with dinner, the once trim and athletic Mr. Tate was pushing 320 pounds.

His wife, Wanda Lee Henshaw Tate, put up with his obesity and his frequent absence not only because she'd meant it when she'd said "for better or for worse" but also because Durden had come through on the "for richer or for poorer" part of the deal. But when she began to suspect Durden was cheating, she decided to get out.And she wasn't about to leave empty-handed. She'd put fifteen of the best years of her life into the marriage and felt she was owed something.

But Wanda Lee needed proof. She needed some photos, something that would make the divorce easy and the alimony as fat as Durden's lard ass. So she pulled out the phone book and looked under "Investigators."

Rick waited until dusk before sneaking into the weedy field just off Highway 61, on the outskirts of Port Gibson, Mississippi. On the far end of the field was the back of the Pine Grove Motor Inn, where Durden Tate had checked in an hour earlier, and not for the first time since Rick had been following him. Rick had a camera bag slung over his shoulder and high hopes that Durden hadn't drawn the curtains all the way.

It was a typical Mississippi summer night, warm and sticky as a sweet pastry. Rick was sweating before he'd gone fifty feet. Halfway across the field, with burrs scratching through his socks and ticks scaling his legs, Rick stepped into a mud hole, sinking past his ankle. He pulled back, losing his shoe. Sewer gas filled his nose and he struggled against the gag reflex. In the waning summer light, he looked down to see the mud oozing into his size 10.

Rick stood there like a flamingo, thinking about the pair of boots in his truck. Sure the loafers were more comfortable, but, well, too late now. It turned out he was standing above an underground wastewater treatment pipe that had been leaking for a week. The rest of the field between Rick and the motel was a rotten-egg swamp. The mosquitoes arrived just as the sun set. He tried to remember if the West Nile virus had been reported in Claiborne County yet.

Having no better option, he stuck his foot back into the ghastly muck, retrieved his shoe, and continued toward the Pine Grove Motor Inn. By the time he reached the motel, both of Rick's feet were soaked through with sewage, his arms and neck were riddled with insect bites, and he reeked of shit. But he still had a job to do, so he crept along underneath the rear windows of the motel, peeking in each one until he found Durden Tate's room. The good news was that the curtain was halfway open and Rick could see Tate sitting on the end of the bed.The bad news was that he was naked, all 320 pounds of him. The TV cast a bluish tint onto his blubbery folds. He had a beer in one hand and the remote in the other. Behind him on the bed were two paper sacks and his Dopp kit.

Durden began to talk, but because of the angle Rick couldn't see who he was talking to.Though Tate's voice was muffled, Rick could tell he was sweet-talking somebody. It appeared that the recipient of the honeyed words was lying on the floor. Durden reached behind him and grabbed one of the sacks. It was filled with onion rings from the burger joint across the highway. He continued his sweet-talking as he ate the fried onions. He tossed one to the floor, presumably for his companion. Why was she down there? Was Durden in a domination-submission relationship? Rick hadn't figured him for the type but, as he knew, people will surprise you. Rick popped off the lens cap and waited for the leather hood to come out. Durden ate the onions slowly, eyes closed, lips glistening with grease. By the time he finished, there was still no sign of the submissive lover.Maybe she's tied up, Rick thought.

A moment later, Durden reached into the other paper sack and pulled out a jar of peanut butter. He unzipped his Dopp kit and removed a tongue depressor. He scooped a wad of peanut butter onto the wooden stick, then crossed his legs and began smearing the goo between his toes. It looked to be smooth, not crunchy. Rick exposed a few frames of film.

When Durden finished with the left foot, he lowered it to the floor, then shouted, "No!" at his lover. He crossed his legs the other way and took his time smearing the peanut butter between the toes of his right foot. He licked the tongue depressor and chased it with some beer, then he leaned back on the bed and said something like,"Okay, c'mon, baby."

    Fresh, exciting, and witty

This was the first book I had read by Mr. Fitzhugh, and I have since read more of his novels. Mr. Fitzhugh has managed to create a very unique story, centering around a rather unique character in Rick Shannon. His style is very reminiscent of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen, however, Fitzhugh manages to keep his story so fresh and engaging that it also feels very original.

    A fine who-done-it

DJ Rick Shannon has a night music show on a Vicksburg, Mississippi radio station. Though he still believes his mission in life is to save FM radio by reclaiming its southern blues roots, Rick feels emboldened by his recent success in solving multiple homicides. Thus he believes he earned his private investigative license and opens up Rockin' Vestigations....................... Lollie Woolfolk swivels her way into Rick¿s office to hire him to locate her missing grandfather, blues record producer Tucker Woolfolk. The DJ PI figures this case is perfect for him as he knows the blues. Rick learns that Tucker was murdered and his client is missing. He searches for the lost Lollie until a different female sashays her way into his office asserting she is the real Woolfolk. As he ponders will the real Lollie please stand up, Rick meets an assortment of eccentrics, some dangerous in search of revenge and some purring seeking a hand out; none seem helpful. If the DJ sleuth is not careful his fans will sing the eulogy blues for him...................... The latest Shannon tale is a solid regional investigative novel that is more detective than musically inclined (RADIO ACTIVITY was more balanced). Still Rick provides deep in sight into musical history especially in the Mississippi Delta. The sleuthing is fun to follow as the DJ fumbles his way through the investigation more like a stumbling amateur than a professional (he is being paid so he is a pro) except when musicology is involved. Bill Fitzhugh provides a fine who-done-it that his fans will want to sing along with as he travels HIGHWAY 61 RESURFACED.................... Harriet Klausner

    Amazing music & blues mystery

DJ Rick Shannon seems to be single handedly trying to keep FM radio from turning into pablum. He recently solved a multi-murder case while in living in McRae, Mississippi. Although he¿d been in radio all his life, he has decided to become a private investigator by day and, to pay the bills, DJ by night. I am particularly impressed, just as I was with RADIO ACTIVITY, with Bill Fitzhugh¿s enormous knowledge of the music industry going back decades. He can name song titles and authors and artists and their histories as if it were second nature. I am in awe of his knowledge of musical history. However, that isn¿t really what HIGHWAY 61 RESURFACED is all about. While being DJ and PI and taking on several cases, the results are a flawless intertwining of stories. Ironically, as in RADIO ACTIVITY, he ends up looking for a legendary reel of tape. While doing so and searching the backroads and byways, he gets the regional idiosyncrosies just right. He can describe the climate with just as much interest and accuracy as a run down bar where he finds a blues legend. Fitzhugh also has the lingo down for both blacks and whites in the small places in Mississippi where just the old folk live now and prejudice still lives. HIGHWAY 61 RESURFACED is about finding all the secrets that it holds and bringing them to the surface.
