Gr 10 Up

In volume 1, Keiichi moved to a new village and learned that someone has died on the night of the Cotton Drifting Festival for the past four years. Here, he discovers that each of his new friends is connected in some way to the previous victims, and that they may be more dangerous than Keiichi could have imagined. He spends a lot of time worrying, trembling, and talking to himself. Meanwhile, his new friends continue to act sweet and wonderful one minute and darkly terrifying the next-but is that their fault, or are they being controlled by the village curse? Keiichi alternates between being a sympathetic and an annoying protagonist. Sometimes it takes him several pages to worry out loud about whether or not his life is in danger, when the same effect could be achieved more efficiently in a couple of panels. Suzuragi's artwork sets a fantastic mood, especially during the scenes in which the girls appear to be possessed and their eyes look like those of a cat reflecting a flashlight in the dark. The cute/scary ratio of the book remains fairly consistent until the ending, which is far more grisly than many readers might expect.-Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

Well that was a downer wasn’t it? I mean throughout, I was like, why am I reading this at night again? How does anything good come from that? Yeah I like the creepy factor but at times it got a bit silly. Then I’m like no, I don’t like them creepy eyes, not funny at all. So like I said, I’m guessing here that with some of the volumes will be an arc. Not sure how many but you get the idea. The suspense was good. As for the creepy factor, yeah it did its job alright. Thanks for that.

The second volume of Onikakushi-hen(translated by Yen Press as Abducted by Demons Arc) gives us the horrifying(in a good way) conclusion to the chapter, which ends on a very sad note. The art for this chapter is nice to look at, which works well for the scenes in the series, including both the peaceful scenes, the cutesy scenes(mostly involving Rena), and of course, the frightening and violent scenes, especially the last major scene in this book, which has some nice, and a bit grotesque, detail. The translation is done very well, giving us an accurate experience of this chapter. The only minor gripe I have is that Oishi's first name, Kurado, is misspelled as Claude near the end of the book, which is odd, since in the begining of the book, in the character bios, it is spelled correctly. Nothing major to complain about. This mystery story will keep you guessing until the end, and still guessing afterword, since no real answers are given by the end. The origanal author, Ryukishi07, mentions in the afterword that there is a "key" hidden in the story among many false keys, and wants us to find it. This "key", which I already know about, will give us some answers, but not all of them. At the end, we also get a very short preview of this chapter's Answer Arc, Tsumihoroboshi-hen(Atonement Chapter). Initially, I thought they were skipping to thhat chapter, but after checking online, I saw that that was not the case. There is one thing you may notice in the dialouge near the climax of this volume, regarding an earlier incedent in this chapter(in Vol. 1). I won't go into detail, but this is the "key" Ryukishi07 mentions in the afterword. Here is one hint: The dialouge mentioned and incedent did not occur in the anime. In conclusion, I greatly enjoyed reading this manga, and can't wait for the release of the next arc/chapter, Watanagashi-hen(Cotton Drifting Chapter).

I have just finished vol.1 and 2 of Higurashi and Wow, I am amazing on how well the anime and manga are down to almost the exact same dialog, this kept me on the edge the whole time I read it,Its highly unexpected for the first time reader/watcher of the series, since one second everything is happy and everyone is your friend, to everything is evil and everyone wants you dead, Phenomenal manga I have recommended this series to my friends plenty of times when the Anime came out, now it looks like I need to recommend the manga on top of that! as I said

this book is Simply...wow!
