Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
From streams to deserts to mountains, hikers explore natural landscapes. This introduction to hiking, part of the "Active Sports" series, takes young readers adventuring through all sorts of terrain while explaining the basics and necessities of this popular pastime. Author Valerie Bodden discusses the need for staying on trails and encourages the use of a compass and other fundamental safety measures. Illustrated with professional photographs gleaned from multiple stock photo companies, the book is less a description of an individual hike in one location than a potpourri of breathtaking vistas complementing topic-specific textual information. While the captions often supplement the main body of the text with helpful information, their position and size may distract emerging readers from the primary narrative. A basic glossary and index add an extra educational component and help familiarize students with these common features found in nonfiction. A fun information book with a lot of visual appeal, this title will also encourage young readers to get active and explore their surroundings. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
