There's nothing like rivalry to pique the record-buying public's curiosity. But in the case of actress-turned-pop superstar Hilary Duff, her feud with fellow teen phenom Lindsay Lohan -- which apparently started when both vied for the affection of "It" boy Aaron Carter and reached a feverish pitch during Lohan's mockery of Duff on Saturday Night Live -- only stokes the fire of her already sizzling career. Duff's blockbuster debut, Metamorphosis, positioned the former star of Disney's popular Lizzie McGuire series as the next Britney pre the Madonna kiss and marriage antics, but her self-titled sophomore disc has more in common with the rock-and-angst-driven music of...

Duff's blockbuster debut, Metamorphosis, positioned the former star of Disney's popular Lizzie McGuire series as the next Britney pre the Madonna kiss and marriage antics, but her self-titled sophomore disc has more in common with the rock-and-angst-driven music of peers Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne. On the punk-lite "Haters," co-penned by her sister Haylie, the 17-year-old fires a lyrical missile at her Mean Girls nemesis with lines like "You're the queen of superficiality / Keep your lies out of my reality." And the guitar-fueled "James Dean" disses a former beau who thinks he's cooler than he actually is. The rest of the disc follows suit, with Duff musing on convincing rockers and winning, mid-tempo tracks about typical teen dilemmas like boy trouble "The Getaway", being misunderstood "Do You Want Me?", and, of course, competition "Who's That Girl?", all the while offering an edgier sound than fans might expect from the wholesome starlet.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
What a difference a year makes! In 2003, Hilary Duff crossed over from television to music with the light, effervescent Metamorphosis, a post-Britney teen pop album that kept things bubbly and cheerful. Not only was its innocence a bit of a relief after the highly charged sexuality of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, it was a hit, embraced by a new generation of preteens who were born in the waning days of The New Mickey Mouse Club. Despite its success, it seemed a little antiquated by the spring of 2004, when Avril Lavigne returned with a somber sequel to her trendsetting debut, Let Go, and when Jessica Simpson's little sister Ashlee turned into a star with her rock-based Autobiography, ushering in a new phase of teen pop -- one that was more mature than the bubblegum of Metamorphosis, but only in the sense that it dealt with the angst and preoccupations of early adolescence. Gone were the fluffy party tunes -- gone too was the overamped sexiness of Britney and Xtina -- and in were heavy guitars, anthemic choruses, rock beats, and songs about growing up and finding your identity. Hilary Duff and her producers were smart enough to have her go with the flow, shedding all the bubblegum trappings of her debut and releasing a second album that's a virtual companion to Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, from its rock/dance-pop fusion to its earnest demeanor, right down to Ashlee's producer John Shanks helming a couple of tracks. This makeover may be trendy, but it's also admirable since it results in a varied, ambitious album, even if that ambition sometimes gets the better of Hilary. At 17 tracks, the album is way too long and its straight-faced seriousness can be a little oppressive at this length, particularly since Duff can't quite pull off everything she tries. While she has a likeable, girlish voice, she's not a great singer and that occasionally hurts the album -- witness how she struggles to reach her lower register on the dirge "Hide Away." Nevertheless, those very limitations are quite appealing when they're matched to the right song, whether it's a sweet ballad or on the heavy rockers, of which there are many. There's silliness here, such as the hipster putdown "Mr. James Dean," but that makes the album feel endearingly adolescent. And that's the greatest charm of Hilary Duff -- it might take itself a little seriously, it might be a little uneven, but it feels like the soundtrack to the life of a smart, ambitious, popular teenager trying to sort things out.

    Not Your Best Hilary!

I really love all of Hilary's music but this album was very disappointing. Hilary tries to become a punk rocker and the results are unbearable. She's better with her new song "With Love". Hilary I love you but this album was bad. The only songs I liked were "Haters", 'Fly and Someone's Watching Over Me"

Acting? Good. Singing?? OH SO BAD

I like Hillary for her acting. But her singing? I don't think so. Fly is the only decent song. Seems like every single one of the pop stars Disney's made have been terrible, sometimes painful to listen to. Stay away from the singing, Hil', and save us time and money. Acting is the thing you're GOOD at.

A Good, But Not Great Follow Up...

The First Album Was Great, And I Was Really Expecting This To Be Better. Don't Get Me Worng, Some Of Teh Songs Are Very Good, Haters, Fly, The Hideaway. But This Has No Comparison To The First. Sorry Hil' But This Could Have Been Better.

    This is her best cd

this cd has more feeling and emotions in it than her first and her last cds. it sounds like she took more time writing the songs and its not just some sugary pop music. this is my favorite cd by her, i love it. every single track is good!

    Not her best

We all fell in love with Hilary Duff for one reason: Lizzie Mcguire and Metamorphosis but this album is terrible. What I do like is Hilary's look. She looks sexy as alwayz but the songs are terrible. She's trying to be Ozzy Osbourne rock and she's not doing it well. I liked 2 songs on here.

    Hilary Duff Rocks

Hilary's songs are so full of feeling, you can't help singing along. She has a strong voice, although it may not be the best. Pretty much all the songs are great, and Hilary Duff shines through the pictures in the booklet.

    Oh Help Us All

Everytime I hear Hillary Duff or Lindsay Lohan I think Christina vs. Britney Spears, this is just another Hollywood attempt to get two "talented" girls to get the media going to buy their prepackaged music. I heard Hillary's and her sisters...(what's her name?) Our Lips Are Sealed. It made me wonder what the heck did she have to seal? The entire world knows she sucks. If i were you i would not buy hillary's cd on the reason she is just a little kiddie running around trying to sing (and failing)

    Better Than The First

Well, at least it was beter than the first. It was pretty good though. my favorites were 'Jericho' and 'Fly'. The best thing about Hilary is she's so squaky clean, but it's great.

    BETTER THAN THE BEST!

This CD is the ABSOLUTE best I've ever heard. Even if you're not a Hilary Duff fan, you're guarenteed to relate to the way she expressed her sadness, anger, love, and joy all in one CD! I really drifted away in the music. I just couldn't stop listening to the gorgeous, sweet sound. This CD is more than just a bunch of breath-taking songs in a small disk of metal. It's superb! It's remarkable! And most of all, it's Hilary Duff! And Hilary Duff is all of those put together! This CD is like a little piece of Heaven. Actually, it IS Heaven!

    Hilary rocks!

This CD was great. I loved "Fly", "Mr. James Dean", "The Getaway", and "Haters", which has cool lyrics. Hilary Duff is my 2nd fave actress/singer, after Lindsay Lohan. They are both awesome! I also have Hilary's old CD, Metamorphosis. Go, Hilary!

    Hilary's Best CD!!

I LOVE this CD! Hilary Duff really expresses herself in this CD about what has happened to her. I give this CD five stars, but it deserves 100 stars.

    Better Than I Expected

I find this CD to be more mature and more insightful than her previous CD, which I was not at all into. Candy-floss music is not my type but after listening to this CD I must admit I have a new respect for Hilary Duff. The music is great and the words: true to life. Favorite tracks are Fly, Hide Away & Someone Watching Over Me.

    WOW!

Hilary Duff is, to me, a very good person. Never have I seen her wear revealing clothes or say bad things. She's one of the few "clean" musicians of today. In this CD, I really enjoyed the songs. She doesn't have the best voice, but it's decent enough to listen to. I love "Fly" "Do You Want Me?" "Underneath This Smile" "The Getaway" and "Rock This World". They're all very good but those are my favorites. Please get this-it's very awesome!

    LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

This is SUCH a good CD. Hilary Duff is my 2nd favorite actress/singer. I especially loved "Fly", "Mr. James Dean", "The Getaway", and "Haters", which has really cool lyrics simply because it's directed at someone. Go Hilary!
