Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tracy Koretsky
This fluffy biography of a tween star cites major landmarks in a remarkably precocious career. Ms. Duff's accomplishments range from lead roles in major motion pictures to her own television series, best selling pop album, and a fashion line—even a Barbie doll modeled after her. While all this is certainly more than enough to fan the flames of any young girl's fantasies, the coverage compiled from sources such as Interview, Seventeen, Girl's Life, and Billboard glosses the hard work, discipline, connections, and luck that surely factored into the story. There is one sentence devoted to Duff's independent academic tutor and one mention of a voice coach. On the other hand twenty-two of the book's forty-eight pages contain photographs of the widely smiling young performer, and most of the others contain teal and pink sidebars or simply gum-pink bubbles magically afloat. These are at odds with the books five-page addenda featuring a time line, bibliography, glossary, and index. It is as if the publisher is trying to add some valence to the floating bubbles. This selection from the "Hot Celebrity Biographies" series tries to eat its cake and still look like a fashion model by posing as a text suitable for a school report. Do not be fooled. While this book would certainly provide squeaky-clean fun for a young reader, especially a reluctant one, this bon-bon should not be mistaken for classroom fare. Reviewer: Tracy Koretsky
