"True Books" have taken on an urgent look as though kids might suspect that previous ones were somehow false. This one promises "Surprising TRUE facts that will shock and amaze you!" That promise is not fulfilled, but middle readers will meet a bright young Hillary Rodham who was active in her community. An excellent student, Hillary went on to an awareness of politics and eventually a commitment to civil rights. After Wellesley and Yale Law School (where she met the ambitious Bill Clinton), Hillary established her law career, eventually moving to Arkansas, Clinton's home state, where they were married, thus beginning a close personal and political partnership. Doak stresses Clinton's devotion to the welfare of children and families through her years as Arkansas' First Lady, as well as to her daughter Chelsea. Campaigning for her husband in 1992 brought Hillary both admiration and criticism for being too outspoken. The debacle over her work on health care reform is passed over rather quickly, as are the accusations about Whitewater and the humiliating Monica Lewinsky (not named) affair, though it's clear that after her husband's terms were over, Clinton was ready to strike out on her own, first as New York's senator and then as presidential candidate (an attractive photo shows Chelsea campaigning for her mother). Clinton's many accomplishments and worldwide travels are admiringly chronicled, as well as her four successful years as Obama's Secretary of State, during which she became an advocate for women and children in many countries of the world. Readers will enjoy the abundant color photos of Clinton at work, though the final one could be more flattering. A list of Clinton statistics and a bibliography will be helpful for report writers.
