Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Controversial though she may be, Hillary Rodham Clinton is and will continue to be an important role model for many in the years to come. In this thorough account of her life up through the Clintons' first few months in the White House, it is clear that the First Lady is quite different from most of her predecessors. Her education; her work on various issues, especially children's advocacy and educational reform; and her political savvy are detailed objectively by Radcliffe. We don't learn many details of her private life, but we do see how she is similar to many women professionals trying to juggle career and family. An important book about the most powerful woman in America. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/1/93.-- Pamela R. Dau benspeck, Warren-Trumbull Cty. P.L., Warren, Ohio

YA-An engrossing look at our First Lady. Radcliffe provides extensive detail about her life and philosophy. A description of her early years sets the stage for readers to see how and why she came to be the person she is. Beyond an impressive resume of accomplishments, this account provides a ``behind the scenes'' glimpse at the private individual as well as the constantly visible public figure. Interspersed throughout the text are candid interviews with family, close friends, associates, and Clinton herself. A woman to watch, a biography to read.-Linda Vretos, West Springfield High School, Springfield, VA

Mention Hillary Rodham Clinton's name, and there is no middle road. Either she is perceived as a pushy, arrogant, manipulative bitch or she is seen as an intelligent, poised, determined, competent woman who relishes a challenge. Those readers in the anti-Hillary camp will not find any fuel to flame their fire in this rather adulatory biography by a "Washington Post" writer. The already well known biographical material is all here, beginning with an idyllic childhood in a middle-class, conservative Republican Chicago suburb where in high school Hillary was known as an "overachievers' overachiever." Her days at Wellesley College and Yale Law School, where she met the gregarious southerner "with the Elvis sideburns," are also documented, as is her work on the impeachment-inquiry staff during the Watergate era, before her reluctant move to the Arkansas hinterlands. Many of the comments Radcliffe cites come from magazine and newspaper articles and campaign and commencement speeches, so few, if any, new tidbits emerge. Still, clearly and smoothly written, this is a perfectly acceptable, readable biography in which pragmatic Hillary emerges as a brilliant, capable wife, mother, and attorney who seems to have it all.
