Overview

Carlo Maria Giulini was a conductor of immense musical integrity, as evidenced by the three works on this disc. He is considered a continuation in the line of brilliant Italian conductors from Toscanini to de Sabata to Cantelli. The repertoire here was culled from two concert performances in the Royal Festival Hall, London. The Hindemith and Dvorák works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra are from 1969 and the Beethoven overture with the New Philharmonia Orchestra is from 1975. This performance of Hindemith's "Concert Music for String Orchestra and Brass" shows off the virtuosity, solidity, and strength of this very pleasant music scored for a four-voiced string section, four horns, four trumpets, three trombones, and tuba. With all of this brass, the piece can't help but sound festive -- at least in the faster portions. Giulini and the orchestra give Hindemith's music a dynamic, secure reading, yet they are careful not to let the brass dominate or drown out the strings. Giulini achieves a balance in which the melody always comes through. Dvorák's "Symphony No. 7" is here given a lyrically warm, yet dynamic statement. Giulini was a violist before becoming a conductor and, as a consequence, is especially sensitive to the importance of the inner string parts. With its rich, clear string tone, this reading is spacious and flexible and ranks among the best recorded performances of this work. Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" is one of Giulini's favorite concert starters. His reading here is tight and dynamic, especially demonstrating its dramatic contents.
