Overview

The rise of authoritarian Hindu movements in India since the 1980s raises fundamental questions about the resurgence of ethnic, religious and nationalist movements in the late modern period. This book traces the history and ideas of Hindu nationalism from the middle of the last century to the present and critically examines the social and political philosophies of its key thinkers.
Hindu nationalism is based on the claim that it is an indigenous product of the primordial and authentic ethnic traditions of India. Bhatt argues instead that these ideologies are based on relatively recent western ideas. The impact of eighteenth and nineteenth century European Romanticism and Enlightenment rationalism on Indian primordialist thinking is examined. As well as considering the ideological affinities between National Socialist and Fascist ideas and the formation of modern Hindu nationalism in the 1930s, the book looks at how the development of ideas of racial Aryanism continues in a different and unexpected form today. The author also examines the more recent activities of the Hindu nationalist movement in the South Asian diaspora, and how the deeply political agendas of the movement have found a home in many New Age projects in the West.
Using a wide range of theoretical approaches, the author critically explores the consequences of these forms of religious, ethnic and nationalist resurgence for recent debates about globalization, citizenship, ethics and modernity.

Author Biography: Chetan Bhatt is Senior Lecturer in the Sociology Department at University of London.
