Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Religion is a belief in a supernatural power. Katy Gerner writes about six world religions in an effort to help people learn and understand each others' differences. The oldest religion that continues to be practiced today is Hinduism, which is at least five thousand years old. It is also the third largest religion. After death, Hindus believe they are reincarnated into any species, human being the most desirable. In the Caste system, the untouchables are the lowest. Yoga began in India and is believed to help with spirituality. Hindus actions become their Karma and all living things are sacred. Hindus must be honest, kind, and fair. They study Sanskrit and the Vedas, which are their sacred scriptures. Hindus set up small shrines at home, so they can worship daily. Some of their festivals last for days. Ram Mohan Roy is called the father of modern India. He abolished the practice of sati, a funeral custom where the widow climbed onto her husband's funeral pyre and was burned to death. Gandhi was a political and spiritual leader who campaigned for independence from the British. Astrology has an influence on the lives of Hindus. Their ancestors are honored with many traditional activities. The majority of Hindus live in India. An index is helpful to quickly locate information. A glossary is included with the bold words in the text identified. The photographs and graphics are attractive and eye catching. This is a part of the series, "Religions Around the World."
