Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Opening with the first person account of a 15-year-old British Hindu boy, this title in the publisher's "World Religions" series answers a range of questions framed in the titles of its chapters: "What is Hinduism?" "How Did Hinduism Begin?" "How Do Hindus Live?" "How Do Hindus Worship?" "How Has Hinduism Changed Over Time?" "What Challenges Do Hindus Face Today?" Each chapter also includes a debate topic with suggested pro and con positions so that young readers can grapple with the complexities of some of the unfamiliar ideas they might encounter. The material in each chapter feels current and relevant to children today, and the author takes pains to include material reflecting the diversity of viewpoints and traditions seen in contemporary Hindu communities and practices. Photographs illustrate the straightforward text and offer a balance between traditional and contemporary images. Text boxes spotlight topics related to the religion such as yoga, the Sanskrit language, rites of passage in a Hindu's life, the rise of Hindu-driven political forces in India, and more. Additionally, subjects such as genetic modification of plants, and shifting immigrant identities, offer windows to the continuing evolution in the opinions and sensibilities of people around the world who call themselves Hindus. The "Further Information" page includes books, the locations of selected temples and Hindu organizations in the US and Canada, and web sites and organizations to contact for additional information. Other back matter includes maps showing distribution of Hindus around the world, a time-line, places of Hindu pilgrimage, a glossary, brief descriptions of all the six world religions covered in theseries, and an index. Other titles in this series include Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. In general this Canadian series offers a much more comprehensive and sensitive presentation than can be found in many comparable books published in the U.S. 2004, Whitecap Books, Ages 10 up.
