Overview

Hip is a turtle who raps really slowly. Hop is a bunny who raps superfast. One afternoon they see a poster for a rap contest and become friends. On the day of the big event, rappers like LudaFish and Notorious P.I.G. take the stage. It comes down to a rap-off between Hip and Hop, but this time neither slow nor fast wins the prize.

This engaging new take on the fable of the tortoise and the hare combines elements of comics with a traditional picture book. Hilarious mini-raps recited at varying speeds make for a rollicking read-aloud that kids will want to hear—and perform—over and over.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—The animals that live in Slowjamz Swamp don't interact with the animals from Breakbeat Meadow. This is why Hip the turtle and Hop the rabbit have never met, even though they share a common interest. Hop may be a faster rapper than Hip, but they both have the talent to become finalists in the Rap-Off contest. Their surprising duet at the end of the story wins them more than prizes and trophies though. Their tune about friendship has the entire audience (including the previously dozing snake and comic-reading raccoon) moving to the beat. Speech balloons and short rhymes are seamlessly incorporated into the story line. Red text means read fast and green text means read slowly. Although the humor comes mainly from the remarks of the rappers' neighborhood friends, the bright colors and engaging characters will grab children's attention. Illustrated entirely with cartoon animals (many with asymmetrical eyes and big teeth), Hip & Hop, Don't Stop! could be paired with a version of "The Tortoise and the Hare" or utilized in a music-themed program.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada
Publishers Weekly
Hip, a turtle, lives in Slowjamz Swamp, and Hop, a rabbit, lives in Breakbeat Meadow—a geographic divide that's also a huge social barrier in Oldskool County. But Hip and Hop have one thing in common: they're both devoted rappers (“Listen to the drums/ and listen to the basses./ I've got buck teeth,/ but I don't need braces,” rhymes Hop). Their shared passion becomes the basis for a close friendship, successful partnership, and reconciliation between swamp and meadow dwellers. Cartoonist Czekaj inserts numerous inside jokes—most likely to be caught by adult readers—into the doodlesque drawings of his picture book debut (Breakbeat Meadow borders the Sugar Hills, and a De La Foal poster hangs in Hop's bedroom). But while the story should make for fun read-aloud (Hip and Hop's rhymes are color-coded for quick or slow reading), the pacing flags, and, in its eagerness to convey a lesson about prejudging differences, the conclusion is hazy. It's never entirely clear why combining Hop's fast rhymes, which other animals can't understand due to the rapid delivery, with Hip's soporific rapping equals a winning combination. Ages 3–7. (Feb.)
Kirkus Reviews
Music is the universal solvent of socioeconomic and geopolitical barriers. You may come from the meadow, like a soft-pink bunny named Hop, or you may come from the heart of the swamp, like an algae-green turtle named Hip, but if your game is rapping, you'll find a way, together, to rock the party. Hip and Hop are budding rappers, albeit with different styles; true to their natures, Hip's raps are slow and Hop's raps are like missiles. They combine forces to play off their strengths and weaknesses and win the neighborhood rap contest. Czekaj has produced a good-spirited, high-octane read-aloud. A river of brotherhood runs through the proceedings, and the artwork is particularly friendly, with both Hip and Hop sporting great pollywog heads. The rhymes, however, are what send this tale careening along: "Listen to the drums / and listen to the basses. / I've got buck teeth, / but I don't need braces." Readers can set the lyrics to their own kind of music, engage with poetry and the written word and maybe experience a little of that universal harmony. (Picture book. 3-6)
