Overview

Authored by the foremost experts in the field, this comprehensive clinical reference covers the diagnosis and treatment of hip and pelvis injuries seen in sports medicine practices. Hip and Pelvis Injuries in Sports Medicine details the physical examination and radiology of the hip and pelvis and describes techniques for treating all the important problems encountered in athletes. Of special note is the thorough coverage of problems that occur before a hip replacement is needed.

The book provides detailed information on hip intra-articular disease along with all of the bony and soft tissue injuries around the hip joint. Other conditions covered include stress fractures, adductor injuries, sports hernias, and hamstring injuries. Treatment methods described include both arthroscopic and open procedures. The book is profusely illustrated and includes color throughout.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Scott Paluska, MD (University of Illinois College of Medicine)
Description: This is an ambitious survey of hip anatomy, examination, radiology, and pathology. Its scope is broad to appeal to both surgical and nonsurgical clinicians who treat active individuals.
Purpose: The book is intended to further understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of hip conditions that may not be familiar to many clinicians. It specifically targets team physicians who may be unaware of the less common causes of hip pain and dysfunction. In general, this book fills an important niche in the sports medicine literature and does an admirable job of meeting the stated goals.
Audience: Team physicians are the primary target audience for this book, particularly those who have had additional training in operative or nonoperative sports medicine. However, the book's surgical emphasis makes it more appropriate for orthopedic surgeons.
Features: The book covers the detailed anatomy of the hip and relevant physical examination techniques. Separate sections focus on imaging of the hip and pelvis. Most of the book is dedicated to chapters that highlight the major pathological issues affecting the hip and pelvis. Particular strengths include discussions of femoroacetabular impingement and labral injuries. The chapters all include high quality illustrations, figures, radiographic images, and photographs. Missing is discussion of oncologic, infectious, or other systemic sources of hip pain and pathology.
Assessment: This high quality book offers sports medicine clinicians, particularly surgeons, a broad survey of hip and pelvis disorders experienced by athletes. It nicely fills a void in the literature.
From the Publisher
"I congratulate Dr. Guanche on getting 47 of the leading authorities in hip pathology to contribute to the 1st edition of this book...I'd recommend the book to every orthopaedic surgeon treating young adult hip pathology particularly trainees starting a job with exposure to hip arthroscopy.  It belongs on the shelves of all orthoapedic units involved in treating young adult hips."

Very thorough! Particularly good hip arthroscopy section

Complete coverage of hip injuries and their management. Photographs are clear. Detailed images are plentiful. A must-read for sports medicine specialists and those who are interested in hip arthroscopy.
