After reading Homeboyz with my class, I was quite impressed by Sitomer's style and ordered Hip Hop Poetry & The Classics. This was a great book to add to my toolbox. It is broken down by topic/poetic device and provides both a classic and hip-hop example for each. The contemporary poetry really engages the students while at the same time teaching them the fundamentals of poetry.

Even though this is my 10th year teaching English, I don't consider myself very proficient on the subject of poetry. The writers of this book helped me understand the basics plus gave me ideas to hook my kids onto the idea that poetry is relevant to them. I know next to nothing about hip-hop, but all the selections are really interesting and fun to read, and the kids love them. So far, I've used the exercises on allusion, rhyme scheme and the sonnet, and I've a great experience with all of them. I would definitely buy this book again, and I'm looking forward to buying their next one!

This book has been needed for like about a zillion years now. It's just too dope for words. Got all the tighest rhymers showing there genius up against the those 'classic' poet dudes who died many years ago. If you like Hip-Hop, you need this book!
