Overview

The newest Hip Hotels volume focuses on winter sports and stylish places to stay. With ever more people enjoying the thrill and the spectacle of the mountains, the choice of ski hotels has become enormous, yet they are overwhelmingly mediocre. Now Herbert Ypma proves that there are alternatives to the tired formulae of the typical resort hotel, no matter what your destination might be.

The Plumpjack Inn in Squaw Valley, California, is a fantasy of burnished metal and heraldic style: an unlikely eclectic success. Aspen Meadows in Colorado offers the finest in up-to-the-minute luxury. Or maybe you'll prefer the romantic haven of Sundance, Robert Redford's unspoiled Utah retreat, where you can unwind in your own mountain cottage after a long day on the slopes. The recently renovated H&244; tel des Dromonts in the French Alps is a wonder of sixties organic style in a building shaped like a fir cone. Or experience the views from the Hotel Ancora in Cortina d'Ampezzo, one of the world's original ski resorts, amid the jagged peaks of Italy's Dolomite mountains.

Remote lodge in the Canadian Rockies or Wild West authenticity, alpine log cabin or sleek contemporary style—the possibilities are amazing. Hip Hotels Ski adds a whole new dimension to adventures in the snow. 500 photographs, 400 in color.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Forget crowded lodges and cookie-cutter condos-the latest installment in the Hip Hotels series proves there's a world of style in aprhs-ski accommodations. This glossy volume profiles 40 swanky and funky hotels in 24 of the best ski towns in North America and Europe. In his typical fashion, Ypma, a photographer and writer, avoids obvious luxury locales, opting instead for hidden jewels and off-the-wall treasures. In the chapter on Aspen, he explains, "Ask most Aspen regulars to name a hotel and they will inevitably mention The Nell or Hotel Jerome." Not Ypma-his choices are the Brand and Aspen Meadows. Over 500 sumptuous photographs (379 in color) support his claims and beckon travelers to shun conformity. Ypma's in-the-know descriptions introduce readers to the quirky history of these unconventional abodes. At Italy's Hotel California in Champoluc, each room and suite is dedicated to a rock legend: the Doors, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and the Byrds are among the choices. At Squaw Valley's PlumpJack, the food is outstanding and the "prevailing aesthetic is entirely its own-a kind of backyard-baroque Arts and Crafts with a rusty twist." This book can help readers choose a hotel with the perfect personality to greet them after a long, cold day on the slopes. (Nov.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
