Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"This fascinating, well-documented book provides techniques, strategies, and knowledge to help Latino parents become better advocates for their children with ADHD. Mental health professionals, too, will find useful tools for providing appropriate treatment."--Dulce Torres, LPC, Executive Board Member, Texas Association of School Based Health Centers
"This second edition presents an up-to-date vision of what we know as attention-deficit disorder, emphasizing the aspects that are most pertinent to our culture. It offers detailed information on the treatments utilized and the most recent findings from scientific research with Hispanic children. In simple words, it presents concepts that are difficult to explain to parents and teachers. Additionally, the book appeals to the reader's sensibility and sense of humor. Dr. Bauermeister generously shares his vast clinical experience working with attention-deficit disorder, making this a great contribution for Spanish-speaking families."--Iris Vargas Moll, PhD, school psychologist
"The most comprehensive Spanish-language ADHD resource available today. From the latest research on executive functioning to a discussion of common co-occurring disorders, the effects of ADHD at each stage of development are thoroughly examined. Dr. Bauermeister teaches parents and educators how to effectively manage the challenges of this condition, and provides important information about assessment, diagnosis, behavioral and pharmacological treatments, and how to foster school-home collaboration. A wealth of information is presented in an easy-to-read format."--Ricardo Eiraldi, PhD, Department of Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

"A unique guide for parents, teachers, and professionals who work with Hispanic children. Once again, Dr. José J. Bauermeister puts a series of effective and practical real-life recommendations within our reach. There are six new chapters that address essential themes, among them an excellent chapter that presents strategies on how to explain ADHD to a child and how to look for and obtain resources. Giving clear, correct information to children with ADHD can help maintain their emotional well-being and, at the same time, protect their self-esteem. Another chapter emphasizes the importance of taking each child's particular needs into account and providing treatment with both proactive and reactive components. I have great hope that this book will pave the way for more appropriate diagnosis and treatment of Hispanic/Latino children in the United States."--Angela María Gaviria, EdS, Special Education Programs Division, San Diego Unified School District

"Dr. Bauermeister brings to this book more than 30 years of clinical work with families of children with behavior problems, his substantial investigation in the field of ADHD, and his encyclopedic knowledge of the vast literature about ADHD. I recommend this book highly to any family within the Hispanic culture that is looking for the most precise, scientifically based, useful and up-to-date information about ADHD in children. I congratulate Dr. Bauermeister for this job and for the long hours that he has worked to create this informative and culturally sensible book for Hispanic parents of children with ADHD. Simply stated, there is no better resource than this book for these families."--from the Foreword by Russell A. Barkley, PhD, Research Professor of Psychiatry, SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse

"It's only rarely that behavior professionals can capture in words their genuine interest in educating and supporting parents and teachers. This unique book is grounded in 30 years of clinical experience and up-to-date scientific knowledge about Hispanic children with ADHD. Dr. Bauermeister speaks directly to the reader in a friendly, professional tone. He guides us with honesty and humor, within a culturally informed framework that reflects who we are as Hispanics. The advice and hope that this book offers to parents will help children and adolescents with ADHD achieve a more successful future. A unique and indispensable masterpiece!"--Catherine E. Salvá, CHADD Chapter Coordinator, Caguas, Puerto Rico

A Puerto Rican clinical psychologist and active researcher of Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bauermeister has compiled an accessible guide for parents and teachers to the causes and symptoms of this disorder and the available treatments. Most ADHD titles available in Spanish are translations of U.S. material, containing statistics from that country and suggestions that reflect American cultural and social conventions. This work is instead a culturally sensitive guide, as Bauermeister draws from his clinical work with Latinos and identifies typically Hispanic behavior that can cloud diagnosis of this syndrome. For instance, the patting and touching Latinos habitually engage in during social interactions can be seen as a sign of the disorder in the United States. Bauermeister also examines other variables that can affect children with the disorder, including age, economical conditions, and family and school environments. Although the text is exhaustive, Bauermeister's language is never technical and the book is filled with helpful graphics, hints, and instructive testimonies about ADHD. The last two chapters provide a variety of recommendations for helping parents and teachers deal with the child's difficulties, use medication effectively, and develop behavior management and attention skills. Despite Bauermeister's old bibliography he quotes a 1988 study of childhood maladjustment in Puerto Rico, for instance most of the information remains relevant and useful. An appendix listing support organizations in Latin America and the United States, as well as a glossary of a few Puerto Rican idioms that may confuse other Hispanics, further enhance the book's utility. Highlyrecommended for school and public libraries and bookstores. Carmen Ospina, "Criticas" Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
