Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There are three very short stories in this level 1 book in the "Scholastic Reader" series. In the first, Rabbit is appalled that Hippo is having a cheeseburger for breakfast. Rabbit offers Hippo some good food—a carrot, lettuce and a tomato for a healthy salad. But clever Hippo has other ideas much to the chagrin of Rabbit. In the second story Hippo is sitting on a swing and Rabbit offers to give a push, grunting and groaning—but what a difference when it is Rabbit's turn on the swing and Hippo's to push. A thunder storm can be scary and while Rabbit claims not to be the least bit afraid, he is not averse to sharing his bed with Hippo. That last scene should bring a few laughs. This early reader is aimed at grades Pre-k-1, is identified as guided reading level "J" and has a word count of 277. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
